Luxury holidays in Telavi

In the foothills of the Tsiv-Gombori mountains, overlooking the Alazani Valley, lies Telavi, a city of ancient temples, monasteries and meandering rivers that’s the capital of the Kakheti wine-growing region. After indulging in a wine tasting or two, explore the bronze-age city, including the imposing stone fortress of Batonis Tsikhe, a bustling market offering (almost) everything under one roof and if that’s not enough, look out for Soviet-era monuments and ‘Bloc-chic’ retro transport.

When to go

The months of May through October bring the warmest, driest climes to this mountainous pocket of Georgia – with autumn our pick of the seasons for its sense of revelry around the grape harvest.

Getting there

  • Planes

Most international flights touch down at Tbilisi International Airport, from where it’s less than two hours by road to Telavi.
  • Automobiles

Unless you’re planning a multi-centre trip, you won’t need wheels to explore the city itself, as most of it is walkable and taxis are in plentiful (affordable) supply.
