Luxury holidays in Negombo

Cinnamon originally put Negombo on the map, but, since then, it’s become a beach town with a story to tell through its Buddhist temples, Dutch canals and Portuguese churches – and of course plenty of prawns. Wander through its spectacular fish market for a glimpse of the catch of the day and, after a tough day of idling on one of Negombo’s wide, sandy beaches or touring nearby wetlands, that freshly caught lobster will taste even better.

When to go

Negombo can be enjoyed year-round, but to avoid any monsoon-marred weather, stick with April to September.

Getting there

  • Planes

Negombo is just 15 minutes by road from Colombo's Bandaranaike International Airport. Direct flights from Sydney and various European cities are offered by Sri Lankan Airlines. For local trips, Sri Lankan Air Taxi's Otter aircraft touch down in Peliyagoda, a 40-minute drive from Negombo
  • Trains

The nearest railway station to Negombo is Colombo Fort, with connections to coastal towns including Bentota, the southern city of Galle, and various scenic destinations inland.
  • Automobiles

There’s no need to rent a car when Negombo is so near the airport – especially with Sri Lanka's trying traffic and the abundance of affordable taxis.
