When to go

Wengen is a year-round resort, but it’s livelier in winter and summer, with some seasonal closures for bars and eateries during spring and autumn. If you want the quietest of trips, pick May or June, when the mountain pastures spring back into life.

Getting there

  • Planes

To reach Lauterbrunnen, for rail connections to Wengen, there are a few airport options: Zürich and Basel are both two and a half hours away by car, and Geneva is three hours.
  • Trains

Take the Wengernalpbahn cog railway from Lauterbrunnen to Wengen – it’s been running for a couple of centuries and is still the only way to reach this tucked-in-the-valley resort.
  • Automobiles

Wengen is a car-free zone, so keep things Swiss and take the train instead.
