Hotel restaurant

Head chef Patrick Kriss (of Alo fame), takes the reins at Alder – the hotel’s destination restaurant that’s attracting Toronto’s coolest crowds. Orange-tinted tables are set around the hotel’s open, wood-fire kitchen, where plates magically appear topped with refined Mediterranean fare – prepare for pecorino-finished ricotta ravioli, grilled seafood, fried artichokes, smoked oysters and brown-buttered, baked clams. On the weekends, brunchers fill its booths, awaiting smoked salmon bagels, harissa-marinated fried chicken and waffles, and egg-topped steaks. There are also simpler breakfast spreads served in the Lobby throughout the week.

Hotel bar

Ace’s top-floor bar Evangeline is a cozy, fire-warmed lounge with a browse-worthy list of craft cocktails and fine wines. During the warmer months, a sprawling terrace opens for alfresco aperitifs, and there’s a year-round menu of flavor-packed bites that include ‘nduja-filled olives and hand-shucked oysters.

Last orders

Weekend brunch hours at Alder are 10am–2.30pm; and dinner’s served daily, 5pm–10pm (10.30pm on Friday and Saturday). The Lobby serves breakfast from 7am, and pours till 11pm; Evangeline opens from 5pm to midnight (4pm–2am on Friday and Saturday).

Planes

Most international hubs have direct flights to Toronto’s Pearson International Airport, which is just under 40 minutes from the hotel by car. If you’re arriving from within the US or Canada, Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport is a closer 15-minute drive.

Trains

Spadina Avenue station is a 10-minute walk from the hotel, where subways can whisk you around the city. If you’re exploring Canada by rail, Union Station (a five-minute drive from the Ace Hotel) has Via Rail trains to Montreal, Quebec and Ottawa

Automobiles

The city is extremely walkable, so you shouldn’t need a set of wheels. But if you do decide to pick some up, there are parking lots within a five-minute stroll of the hotel, along Adelaide Street and Queen Street West.

Worth getting out of bed for

Being in the locus of Toronto’s Fashion District puts shopping top of our list. Take to some of the 600 stores that line Yonge Street, which stretches all the way from Lake Ontario down to Lake Simcoe. If you prefer more of a rummage, nearby Queen Street West and Spadina Avenue house some of the city’s finest vintage spots, including Absolutely Fabrics, Mama Loves You Vintage and Due West. Music-maestros will also find plenty of record shops down these streets, and on Sundays local-label Arts & Crafts hosts a BYO vinyl night in the hotel’s lobby.

Along Richmond Street – a five-minute walk away – you’ll find a collection of local, not-for-profit galleries such as Gallery 44, Tangled Arts + Disability, A Space Gallery and Vtape. There are also monthly exhibitions at the hotel, hosted by their rotating artists in residence.

Local restaurants

Gusto 101 – a small, Southern Italian restaurant – is set in a surprisingly snug space on Portland Street that once housed an auto-body shop. These days, wrecked cars are replaced with chattering locals who fill its tables for traditionally cooked pastas and pizzas, paired with carafe-served wines. Chubby’s Jamaican Kitchen is storied for its jerk chicken, which is marinated for four days before being barbecued over maple wood for a sweet, smoky finish. The team behind Alo Food Group have set up Aloette, an amped-up diner that serves elevated French and American comfort food.

Local cafés

Coffee and donuts fill the menu at Cops – but they don’t serve just any sweet treat, these donut recipes have been meticulously developed by some of the city’s finest chefs and food scientists to secure their legendary status. 

Local bars

The iconic Cameron House has been hosting local musicians since 1981, bringing underground gigs and pulled pints to the corner of Queen Street West. For something sit-down, Bar Chef takes their cocktails seriously: lengthy menus are split into flavor-based sections and poured against a backdrop of exposed brick and low-level candlelight.

It’s no strings attached at Ace Hotel Toronto, an all-about-the-arts stay in the city’s downtown Fashion District. This cultural neighborhood may be all converted warehouses and reimagined factories, but Ace’s Seattle-based visionaries decided not to follow suit, building from scratch with the help of native Shim-Sutcliffe Architects. The result: a cantilevered masterpiece that’s come to be the ‘hood’s coolest hangout. Inside, imposing concrete arches characterize an all-welcome lobby, while rooms pair the Ace group’s signature frills (in-room turntables and guitars) with a distinctly Torontonian touch, courtesy of artwork and vintage finds all sourced locally. But it’s what sits above and below that really draws crowds. Down a set of copper-cast stairs from the lobby, renowned chef Patrick Kriss helms a Mediterranean restaurant that’s become the talk of the town. A fleeting 14 storys above, the top-floor bar serves tipples fireside and, come warmer weather, shifts its focus to the city surveying terrace. It’s safe to say, this Smith-approved group has aced it once again.
