Setting

Parkside power play

At the Alexander Hotel, it’s instantly apparent that everything is going to be just right. The glass elevator takes you above the canopy of Chapultepec Park, into a light-flooded wonderland of polished marble and contemporary concrete, punctuated by black-and-white portraits and pops of deep purple. The soul of the hotel is the caviar bar, where live jazz plays, crystal glasses clink, and guests sink into rich leather armchairs. Later, retire to your super-sized, high-tech suite and revel in its modern romance.

Hotel restaurant

The Caviar Bar is the hub of the hotel, serving imaginative haute cuisine for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Naturally, the stars of the show are the sturgeon eggs – Osetra Signature topping the podium – but they’re not alone on the menu. Stone crab claws, feather-light smoked salmon, and truffled taglioni are among the supporting cast, alongside slab-like wagyu steak.

Hotel bar

The Caviar Bar is just the spot for cocktails, with a menu dreamed up by leading Mexican mixologist, Mica Rosseau – expect hibiscus-infused mezcalitas and root vegetable martinis.

Breakfast is from 7.30am to 10.30am; lunch and dinner run from 3pm to 10pm.

Room service

Take your pick from the room service menu, or order-in from either of the restaurants downstairs (El Porteño and Cocina Abierta).

Mexico

Alexander Hotel is set within the unmissable Torre Virreyes skyscraper, right on the edge of Mexico City’s megapark, Bosque de Chapultepec. The affluent Lomas neighborhoods unfold around it, and several major museums and galleries are close by.

Planes

Major airlines fly into Mexico City International Airport from most countries around the world. From there, it’s a 45-minute taxi to the hotel, in normal traffic and the hotel can arrange private transfers at extra cost.

Trains

The closest metro station is Auditorio, which is walkable in 30 minutes – but public transport can be challenging, and a better option is to travel by car.

Automobiles

Taxis are the simplest way to get around the city, but stick to online service providers to avoid being ripped off. If you have your own motor, there’s a valet service at the hotel and the car will be stored in Torre Virreyes’ secure covered car park (charges vary by length of stay).

Other

For arrivals by helicopter, there’s a helipad right on the roof of Torre Virreyes.

Worth getting out of bed for

The easiest of excursions is to the spa of course, but for a change of speed you can summon a personal trainer to the gym, or go for free spinning at the neighbouring Síclo. Outside, explore Chapultepec – on foot, by bike, or even by boat at the main lake. The fringes of the forest are seeded with cultural picks, too. The celebrated National Museum of Anthropology is chief among the museums, across from the Tamayo – a trove of modern art: on a small plaza between the two, check out the dizzying “Dance of the flyers”, which is performed every half hour by artists braver than us. Further afield, neighborhoods such as upscale Polanco, fashion-forward Roma, and graceful Condesa each deserve your time if only for a mooch – or a taco crawl if you’re hungry. The Alexander Hotel concierge can arrange gastro tours of the city, as well as day trips to the pyramids of Teotihuacán, Frida Kahlo’s favorite Coyoacán, and the characterful canals of Xochimilco.

Local restaurants

There are cosmopolitan options aplenty in the Lomas neighborhood. Nostos brings the glory of Greek tavernas to the Mexican capital, while Zeru is all about elevated Basque cuisine – including pick-and-mix pintxos and heroic grilled octopus. And for sublime sushi and slurp-worthy noodles, get yourself to Ginza, a no-nonsense and very local favorite.

Local cafés

For smashing smashed avo and Mexico’s preferred hangover dish chilaquiles, the Ojo de Agua down the road is an excellent choice. Opposite, sandwich shop Frutos Prohibidos caters to all your smoothie needs, with a menu including a creamy Cocoa Chanel, a mango-loaded Marilyn Monroe, and a zesty Frida Kahlo.

Local bars

You don’t have to speak the local language to know that the coctelería at Carmela y Sal is the place to head for margaritas and more come sundown. The mixology masters at Limantour are further away in Polanco (30 minutes’ walk), but worth the trip for the mezcal milk punch alone.

As soon as our reviewers have returned from this luxury hotel in the Mexican capital and unpacked their mezcal and maracas, a full account of their urban adventure will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Alexander Hotel in Mexico City…

Mexico City is a marvellous and magical place, but there are times when all you want to do is escape. Step forward, Alexander Hotel – here to lift and cosset you above the rumbling jumble of street-level life. It has all the ingredients of a modern classic, not least in its iconic setting, within Teodoro González de León’s Torre Virreyes – an inverted wedge of twinkling glass and metal affectionately known as “the Dorito building”. On this occasion, the dip for the chip is the endless guacamole-green expanse of Chapultepec – a forest six times the size of New York’s Central Park, in the heart of this gigantic city. Yes, there’s a vibrant and diverse world to explore out there, filled with creative and culinary hits across a patchwork quilt of neighborhoods… but maybe, just maybe, that could wait… After all, staying put to spend more time with your 600-thread-count linens, custom-made furniture and designer Italian furnishings – set against sweeping park views – is surely the smartest of moves.
