Our favourite rooms

Top Table

Nab the corner seat for peak romance; or by the window watching the snowflakes fall.

Dress Code

Go mad for plaid.

Hotel restaurant

Glorious Glorietta Trattoria doesn’t do breakfast, but you can head over to sister-stay Alpine House for made-to-order morning bites, before she opens her doors for dinner. And her wood-fired mains, a whole lot of handmade pasta, wine from the cellar and artfully crafted cocktails are worth the wait. Expect dishes such as truffled chicken, confit rabbit and Wagyu hanger steak, as well as heaped-high plates of pasta (hello, cavatelli with ricotta, spicy sausage, brown butter and fried sage) – mountain days burn a lot of calories.

Hotel bar

There’s an adults-only bar in Glorietta, where you can order anything from the main restaurant menu, as well as snacks including mozzarella sticks, arancini and calamari. Wash it down with a Sweet Cheeks – cucumber-infused gin with pear, carrot, ginger and lemon juice – or one of the ‘Heavyweights’ (Negronis, martinis and old fashioneds).

Last orders

Dinner is dished between 5pm and 10pm.

Address
Anvil Hotel
215 North Cache Street
Jackson
83001
United States

You’ll find Anvil Hotel in the Wyoming valley of Jackson Hole, named for its 50-mile flat stretch within the otherwise towering Tetons.

Planes

Most international flights will require a layover in one of the country’s surrounding major hubs; once you’ve touched down at Jackson Hole Airport, you’ll only be a 10-minute drive away from the hotel.

Automobiles

The hotel has free parking, but spaces are limited, so if you find it full drive down Cache Street and you should find some spots.

Other

Uber and Lyft taxis are easy to order in Jackson Hole and there are plenty of reliable bus routes, if you don’t fancy driving yourself.

Worth getting out of bed for

Anvil is perfectly placed for checking out all Jackson’s shops, galleries and museums. The hotel concierge can arrange hikes, bike rides, fly fishing, horse riding, hot air balloon rides, golf and national park tours (notably around Yellowstone and Grand Teton) – as well as, of course, skiing, snowboarding, sleigh rides, dog-sledding, snowshoeing and snowmobiling. Hit the slopes of Snow King Mountain, handily right next-door to the hotel. Don’t expect balmy temperatures, but you can meet some moose at String Lake within the Grand Teton National Park. Get the mountain money shot at the much-photographed Oxbow Bend.

Local restaurants

Local flavors and a homelike atmosphere has made the unassuming Snake River Grill (known by natives as ‘the Grill’) a Wyomingite hotspot for over 25 years. Tapas and Tuscan wines are the scene stealers at Bin 22 – a rustic, red-doored restaurant down West Broadway. And for wood-fired Italian fare, try Hand Fire Pizza in downtown.

Local cafés

Stockpile s’mores and all-American sourdough at Persephone Bakery; or continue the flag-flying at Pearl Street Bagels, where imaginatively filled versions of the tasty titular bread are available – just be sure to get there early, lines start building quickly.

Local bars

The Million Dollar Cowboy Bar on North Cache Street has all the saddle-shaped stools, dollar-filled bar counters and live music to let you really live the cowboy dream.

As soon as our reviewers have returned from this outdoorsy stay in Wyoming and unpacked their ski boots and down jackets, a full account of their big-mountain break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Anvil Hotel in Jackson Hole…

In the wild West, it’s not all about the horses (or moose or buffalo) anymore – all winter long, the majestic peaks of Wyoming give Colorado’s finest ski resorts some serious, powder-coated competition. For winter sports devotees, Jackson Hole is a place of pilgrimage. Luckily, Anvil Hotel is opposite the ski shuttle’s last stop, so it’s a swift trip to the main ski area for experienced powder hounds, with beginner-friendly Snow King Mountain on your doorstep, and the stores and dining spots of Jackson within walking distance.

After days spent outdoors, this high-spec cozy retreat is a boon to come home to, with a New York-style Italian restaurant (huge portions of pasta – coming right up), and an Old West vintage vibe that’s brought bang up to date with a fire-warmed, cocoa-serving lobby. And when the snow melts, yes, you can still saddle up for a horseback trek amid stunning Teton scenery. But whichever season draws you to the Cowboy State, you’re sure to be in for a wild ride.
