Setting

A saunter from town

Saint Tropez’s latest ‘it girl’ doesn’t shy away from colour: nautical and nice Arev Saint Tropez is a maximalist’s dream (the French word for which, rêver, is where this boutique hotel gets its name). And it’s earned its stripes with mix-and-match interiors, two tricolore-themed bars and a reverie-prompting pool. The locale’s illustrious boutiques, wineries and beach clubs are within easy reach, but optional, thanks to a holistic spa and revamped restaurant back at base. Dreamy just about covers it.

Our favourite rooms

Sweet rêves arrive easily at Arev Saint Tropez: your sink-into-me bed — a metallic four-poster in the hot-ticket Poolside Suite — is dressed in Hungarian goose-down duvets and pillows, and oh-so-soft linens. Madrileño designer Luis Bustamente’s striking interiors pay homage to the hotel’s roots: a patriotic colour palette, Breton-striped wallpaper and, in all suites, French doors that open onto a private terrace or balcony. The standalone Arev Villa has an awning-shaded terrace poised for tête-à-têtes; the verdant garden views from Classic Room with Balcony contrast the boudoir’s lobster-red furnishings.

Poolside

Poolside daydreaming is not only encouraged, but takes on a creative quality at Arev: the azure polka dots and letters that adorn the pool floor, which propose ‘a rêve in the sun’, are reminiscent of a Matisse cut-out collage. The heated, saltwater pool is flanked by striped sunloungers and scalloped parasols dressed in nautical navy with pops of red, which will match your Tomatini (the pool bar’s signature tipple). In Saint Tropez style, a DJ spins tracks as you lounge and lap.

Spa

The petite Arev Spa has partnered with Saint Tropez brand Maison ST to soothe with cutting-edge and bespoke treatments, which use local ingredients like Mediterranean seawater and mineral-rich algae for all-natural rejuvenation. You can keep your post-massage bubble intact for a bit longer with spells in the hammam.

Packing tips

Your best jaw-dropping bikini to channel Brigitte Bardot — who brought Saint Tropez to the world stage in the Fifties — or emulate her husband Roger Vadim and carry a film camera for poolside photoshoots.

Also

The ever-active will get their fitness fix: stretch out in an alfresco yoga class at Place des Oliviers; get match-fit with a round of padel, or try out the Technogym kit and Peloton bikes at the gym.

Pet‐friendly

Pampered pooches are welcome to stay for €100 each a night. See more pet-friendly hotels in St Tropez.

Children

Welcome. Deluxe Rooms and all suites can accommodate a free baby cot for one under-two; under-16s can stay for free on a sofa-bed in the Junior, Arev and Poolside suites. Plus, babysitting can be arranged on request.

Food and Drink

Top Table

Sidle up on a striped banquette inside, or bag a parasol-framed table on the terrace.

Dress Code

Go big or go home: the hotel’s maximalist interiors and the town’s glam reputation encourage Hermès silk scarfs, bright Birkin bags and plenty of vintage bling.

Hotel restaurant

Locally loved restaurant the Strand has reopened under the hotel’s wings, collaborating with the masterminds behind Bagatelle to breathe new life into this Saint Tropez go-to. Like the rest of the resort, the Mediterranean dishes don’t scrimp on colour, and local ingredients and home-grown produce provide the vibrant materials for artfully plated dishes. Come morning, you’ll find wellness-boosting breakfasts, which you can ‘accidentally’ overlook in favour of flaky pastries and other sweet treats; decadent lunches and dinners are marked by buttery Beluga caviar, confit tomato-topped beef carpaccio and sea urchin spaghetti. And you’ll linger long after the last bite: live music fuels revellers into the evening.

Hotel bar

Roll up, roll up to striped-canopy-framed Q’s Bar, where the eye-catching interiors pack as much as a punch as the mixologist-made tipples, such as the Zebra Negroni (a citrus twist on the classic) or the house Margarita (spiked with pineapple, allspice and Jamaican Jerk bitters). If you’re getting any flashbacks to your night before — which perhaps involved too much loose-hipped dancing on tables — hide behind your designer shades in one of the pool bar’s cabanas; morning-after sustenance comes in the form of a Bloody Shame (chilli vodka, heirloom tomato sorbet, celery spheres, and all the classic trimmings).

Last orders

The Strand serves breakfast from 7.30am–10.30am; lunch is noon–3pm, and dinner is 8pm–midnight. Q’s Bar pours from noon until midnight; the pool bar is open between 10am and 8pm.

Room service

Dishes from a separate menu can be delivered to your door round the clock.

Arev Saint Tropez sits on the quiet outskirts of the ritzy riviera town, a short stroll or shuttle away from Saint Tropez’s boutique-lined centre and sandy beaches.

Planes

Toulon Hyères Airport is a one-hour drive from the hotel, and staff can arrange transfers from €250 each way. Nice and Marseille’s airport are closer to two hours away by road; one-way transfers are available from €380.

Taxis and transfers are easily arranged, plus the hotel runs a free shuttle service to town and Pampelonne beach. If you’re bringing a set of wheels, outdoor parking at the hotel is €40 a night, which includes valet services.

Other

Worth getting out of bed for

Arev Saint Tropez should fulfil all your French fantasies. Browse the hotel’s chic boutiques or play a gentle game of pétanque or padel; sip coffees, flick through magazines or toe-tap to the DJ sets at the olive-tree-framed Place des Oliviers. Venture into town — a short stroll, hotel shuttle or electric-bike ride away — and peruse the designer-lined streets or local produce at bi-weekly farmers’ market at Place de Lices, before scaling the port-facing fortress Citadelle de Saint Tropez. Plage des Canoubiers is a quiet cove, beach babes flock to clubs along Pampelonne Beach, and anything goes at former naturist spot Plage de Tahiti.

Local restaurants

Poised on the craggy coastline that winds towards Cap Camarat, Chez Camille’s siren song consists of rich bouillabaisse and buttery sole meunière, and you can drop anchor on its sea-framed terrace. At bohemian Cabane Bambou on Pampelonne Beach, health-conscious breakfasts and Asian-inspired lunches are interspersed with salty dips and sunlounger-bound tanning sessions.

Local cafés

In case you momentarily forget where you are, the designer-branded pastries and latte art at garden café Dior Des Lices are your sweet reminders. Wholesome Mimosa Saint Tropez is less in your face, but its seasonal salad bowls, homemade ceramics and frothy coffees leave a lasting impression.

Local bars

Tours of winery Château des Marres conclude at their 1907 Wine Bar, where vineyards roll out like a green carpet on all sides, and glasses of rosé pair with charcuterie boards. Beach clubs freckle Pampelonne’s sands and at Bagatelle — run by the team that helped to refresh the Strand at Arev — lingering lunches of seafood ceviche and fresh pasta roll into afternoons of napkin-swishing dancing around your table.

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this brightly hued hotel in Saint Tropez and unpacked their oversized sunglasses and boutique buys, a full account of their dream-like break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Arev Saint Tropez…

Arev Saint Tropez’s traditional façade (fawn walls, terracotta-tiled roof and powder-blue shutters) nods to its storied Saint Tropez co-ords, and its interiors’ colour scheme is also undoubtedly Gallic — patriotic pops of navy, cream and rouge enliven the pool area, bars and bedrooms. But this boutique hotel toes the line between the conventional and contemporary.

In your boldly dressed bedroom, personalised gifts, thoughtful touches and high-tech features place Arev firmly in the present, yet languorous rounds of pétanque and convivial coffees at the hotel’s Place des Oliviers put a timeless Provençal spin on carefree mornings. The tempo picks up come afternoon as live music soundtracks the hotel’s Mediterranean restaurant, taking cues from the region’s bucket-list beach clubs and glitterati-calling hotspots (which are a shuttle ride or amble away).

Arev Saint Tropez’s champagne cocktails and muse-worthy pool may conjure whispers of the Riviera’s golden age, but we have a feeling the best is still to come...
