Setting

More, more Moors

Resting on the easternmost edge of Cape Cod’s curved tip, Awol Provincetown brings a soul-soothing SoCal charm to its New England locale. This laidback bed and breakfast might feel bi-coastal on the inside (think natural linens, cream hues, subtle nautical nods), but the views are enigmatically East Coast, with private patios overlooking the West End’s mirage-like Moors. P-town’s signature pizzazz is close by along Commercial Street, and fireside s’mores await you after a day exploring. Its name might be about leaving, but we’re quite sure you’ll want to stay put.

Awol closes its doors from the end of October until early May, annually.

At the hotel

Free-to-borrow bikes, concierge, boutique and free WiFi throughout. In rooms: 43-inch smart TV, Tivoli Bluetooth radio, minifridge, wine glasses and corkscrews, clothes steamer, bathrobes, hairdryer and Lather bath products. The Lake Suite also has a fully equipped kitchen and separate living room.

Our favourite rooms

Wherever you decide to rest here, you’ll have a private alfresco space. But for something that amps up the seclusion, opt for one of the balcony, rather than patio, rooms — the King Balcony is a winner for sunset-seekers, with its west-facing position, bathing it in Cape Cod’s storied orange hues each evening.

Poolside

The outdoor heated pool sits where the former inn’s parking lot once stood; now the cars are long gone and shaded sunloungers, soul-warming fire pits and sweeping views of the Moors make for a more alluring setting.

Packing tips

Your brightest threads to blend with P-town’s creative crowds — just be sure to leave some suitcase space for any vintage finds you’ll inevitably pick up along the way.

Pet‐friendly

Up to two pups (under 30 kilogrammes) are welcome in the King Balcony rooms for a nightly charge of $50 each. See more pet-friendly hotels in Provincetown.

Children

Welcome; although there aren’t any special facilities to keep little Smiths entertained. The Double Queen Patio sleeps four, but there aren’t any rollaway beds or baby cots to borrow.

Hotel bar

There’s a casual cocktail bar in the lobby, or you can pick up a bottle locally and sip in-room with supplied wine glasses and corkscrews, but otherwise you’ll have to pick your poison in town.

Worth getting out of bed for

Start exploring this quaint pocket of Cape Cod with a mooch along Commercial Street — Provincetown’s social locus, lined with time-honored eateries and independent boutiques. Dive into P-town’s lauded LGBTQ+ legacy with a visit to the Generations Project’s emotive exhibition at the Provincetown Museum, and keep an eye on the town’s rotating roster of all-welcome events

Explore undulating landscapes with Art’s Dune Tours along the National Seashore; or, if you’d rather keep two feet firmly on the ground, the Cape Cod Provincelands Trail and Province Lands Bike Trail take you from P-town’s tip to tail. Sunbathe and sandcastle-build along the New England coast at Herring Cove and Race Point Beach, and wave to offshore residents from the Dolphin Fleet Whale Watch boats.

Local restaurants

Opened in 1947 by two Italian students looking to bring their familial flavor to Provincetown, Ciro & Sal's plates up traditional pasta dishes, fresh fish and perfectly marinated meats in an old-school setting that’s long scored big with locals. Much like a certain music duo, Sal later broke away from Ciro and decided to open Sal’s Place — an equally tasteful, upmarket eatery that gazes over Cape Cod’s striking shore and puts daily coastal catches front and center. For the finest of New England fare, stop by the Canteen, whose butter-dripping lobster rolls are the talk of the town.

Local cafés

Stop for sourdough sandwiches and freshly baked sweet treats at Relish, or fuel up in true American style with chicken and waffles at the iconic Liz’s Cafe.

Local bars

Happy hour stretches from 2pm to 4pm at the Red Inn, where creative cocktails are poured against a sweeping coastal backdrop and soaked up with sliders and oysters. Live music and house-made burgers draw the crowds to Local 186 — a creative and cool hotspot on Commercial Street.

Anonymous review

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this coastal crashpad in Cape Cod and unpacked their seafood pliers and P-town relics, a full account of their moorside break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Awol Provincetown…

Now, we aren’t saying you should pack your bags and make a beeline for the coast without word. But Awol Provincetown has us considering it. Set on the easternmost tip of Cape Cod’s scorpion-like tail, this boutique stay is your excuse for leaving it all behind and living like a fun-loving local — even if it is just for a little while.

Calming coastal-chic interiors impress in rooms, but can’t quite top the winsome views of the West End’s sprawling moors. Outside, you’ll find a pool set for summer soaks and fire pits to idle by till late. We’re certainly enamored, but its locale gives you plenty of reasons to leave too. Free-to-use bikes put Commercial Street a leisurely ride away, and the balmy New England beaches closer still. Whale watch from the port, then enjoy butter-dosed lobster rolls and a spirited drink with the notoriously welcoming natives. Go on, absent yourself for a little recharge, maybe with a few trusted comrades.
