Setting

Genteel West End

Blind Tiger Portland – Danforth Street is a cat with nine lives: this 19th-century mansion turned polished guesthouse was once also a Prohibition-era speakeasy. Today, above-board revelry comprises a free-for-all pantry, wood-paneled billiards room and mid-century-inspired bedrooms. Days are spent mooching around modish Portland; debriefs take place in the fire-toasted social spaces. Drinking here might now be less clandestine – you’ll find glasses and corkscrews in your debonair bedroom – but you can still let your risqué side run wild…

Our favourite rooms

At Blind Tiger Portland – Danforth Street, you can dig your claws into a mix of mid-century furnishings, local artwork and original features – a one-of-a-kind aesthetic that is best swooned over in the bedrooms. We’ve got our eye on Baxter for its broad bay windows and regal four-poster bed; Event Records for its John Calvin Stevens architectural credentials, and Bon Viveur for its private furnished terrace that overlooks the leafy neighborhood. Plus, you’ll find a working fireplace in each of the nine rooms.

There’s no spa at this townhouse stay, but Blind Tiger Portland – Danforth Street can arrange sauna blankets and in-room massages with advance notice.

An appetite for all things culinary and cultural – Portland is a city with plenty of social appeal.

Also

Portland has more than one Blind Tiger, thanks to Danforth Street’s sister stay around the corner, Blind Tiger – Carleton Street.

Children

Welcome, but as there’s no specific kit or rollaway beds, this guesthouse is better suited to older children who can sleep in their own room. The exception is the Bon Viveur room, which accommodates an extra two guests on a sofa-bed for $50 each a night.

Hotel restaurant

There’s no formal restaurant at this get-up-and-go guesthouse, but a daily breakfast bar with toast, yogurt, oatmeal and seasonal toppings fuels days at large in Portland.

Hotel bar

Blind Tiger doesn’t have a bar, but in a nod to the building’s Prohibition-era past, you’ll find a tucked-away billiards room where an illicit speakeasy of the same name once poured. Today, this is one of many convivial corners – others include the skyline-surveying cupola or homely living room – where you can rightfully crack open a beer or bottle of wine. And if you’re excited by the thrill of stolen sips, you’ll find glasses and corkscrews in your room…

Local restaurants

Chaval is a stand-out of Portland’s burgeoning culinary scene: French- and Spanish-inspired sharing plates star alongside an impressive wine list. Maine is a state known for its seafood, and Eventide Oyster Co. takes this in its stride with a marine-skewed menu (the clam bake and lobster roll are noteworthy). Carnivores will be converted at Green Elephant, a casual, pan-Asian bistro showcasing all-veggie dishes.

Local cafés

Rise early to catch the freshly baked breads and pastries at family-run Standard Baking Co. House-roasted beans and single-origin brews draw an in-the-know crowd to Bard Coffee for their morning caffeine hit.

Local bars

It’s hard to take your eyes off the water from Luna Rooftop Bar’s harbor-facing terrace, so much so that your date might start to get jealous… Balance should be restored after some pearlescent oysters and punchy cocktails. Savvy sippers hole up at old-wordly Blyth & Burrows, where experimental mixologists shake up tipples with unexpected(ly good) ingredients.

In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Blind Tiger Portland – Danforth Street in Maine…

They say a tiger doesn’t change its stripes, but Blind Tiger Portland – Danforth Street could be the exception: its 19th-century walls have been home to well-off families, a school and rectory over the years. But its most rambunctious role was its stint as a Prohibition-era watering hole, otherwise known as a ‘blind tiger’. During this time, the Federal-style mansion was nicknamed ‘Social Corners’ for its conviviality, which the guesthouse’s designers have paid homage to in the building’s latest iteration, with a host of communal spaces that encourage a similar neighborly atmosphere. You can help yourself to a day-starting spread in the dining room, curl up by the fire in the living area or have a good-spirited game of billiards in the former speakeasy space. But it’s not all socializing with no one-on-one time: the rooftop cupola is a romantic sunset spot, there are picnic baskets to borrow for daytime dates, and we’ll let the handsome bedrooms speak for themselves…
