Setting

Hey, Bay of Cannes

Soap factory, grand residence and now chic Riviera resort, Château de Théoule scrubs up beautifully in its newest form. Comfortable sea-spying rooms, with sheer drapery tumbling to parquet chevrons, are spread over the crenellated chateau and the blocky art deco building, bolstered by a private beach that hosts a Riviera-worthy regiment of dazzling white loungers facing the sparkling Med. Feet in the sand, cocktail in hand, white masts bobbing in the distance: everything points to a truly spotless stay.

Our favourite rooms

Your favourite room at Château de Théoule may depend on your architectural preferences. There’s the simplicity of the bedrooms in the sleek villa building, with their soft, romantic colours, glam-but-never-gaudy fittings and simply sweeping shapes. Or there’s the pull of the turrets and crenellations of the older chateau building. Our top pick is the generously proportioned Millésime Suite with its own private terrace overlooking superlative Bay of Cannes views.

Poolside

The outdoor, unheated chlorinated pool (open 9am to 8pm) has an on-duty lifeguard and families are welcome to swim here. Guests have access to the private beach with loungers, parasols and a bar-restaurant. Book your lounger in advance to guarantee your spot.

Worth getting out of bed for

The little hub of Théoule-sur-Mer, right on the doorstep, offers a charming harbour, restaurants and cafés, and also some good terrain for hiking. Château de Théoule’s prime Côte d'Azur location also puts it within easy distance of several well-heeled Riviera outposts. It’s around a 15-minute drive into the centre of Cannes, with its pretty old town lanes, museums and yacht-rich marina. It’s a 30-minute drive to Antibes with its well-preserved old town and Picasso Museum, and about 40 minutes to Nice, where highlights include the stroll-worthy Promenade des Anglais and the flower market. A little further afield, around 90 minutes’ drive away is Saint-Tropez, with its citadel and swathe of high-end boutiques. And of course, all along the region’s stunning coastline there are beaches and boat trips galore.

Local restaurants

Local favourite Chez Philippe in Théoule-sur-Mer offers a sea-fresh menu of all sorts of delicacies, including oysters, caviar and richly flavoured bouillabaisse, along with meatier plates, such as beef fillet and guinea fowl. Over in Cannes, there’s more fancy fruits de mer at Pierre Gagnaire’s Le Fouquet’s Brasserie, which serves up everything from champagne brunches to grilled sea bream and lobster fricassée. For a more casual beach affair and plates full of Italian flavour, try the Hotel Mondrian’s Hyde Beach Cannes.

In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Château de Théoule on the Côte d'Azur.

Hoteliers Alexandra and Philippe Monnin are no strangers to creating inimitable hotel experiences through their Millésime hotel brand. They fell for this unique multi-part property, from its brick-and-turret chateau and separate villa, to its sleek 1930s counterpart. Château de Théoule’s 44 lovingly decorated guest rooms range from charming art deco-inspired spaces with shell sconces and curvy cane furniture, to spacious chateau chambers with delicately arched picture windows. All rooms have been kitted out in soft tones chosen to work in harmony with their sparkling Mediterranean setting.

You could spend the whole day out on the hotel’s private sandy beach, with the bar-restaurant keeping you fed and watered on your pristine bayside lounger. This is also a romantic spot to watch the sun go down and the twinkling lights blink on around the Bay of Cannes
