Setting

Piste-perfect town centre

From the group of cocktail bar fame, Experimental Chalet Val d'Isère will soon shake things up in this wild-about-winter town. Pistes are a stomp away, and Vanoise massif views are the screensaver to most rooms. This all-ages basecamp is outfitted in retro-chic hues of Aperol orange and absinthe green; drink in the real deal at the talk-of-the-town bar and two Savoyard dining spots. The bar has been set high, but this chic chalet is set to exceed expectations…

Our favourite rooms

Retro interiors at Experimental Chalet Val d'Isère inject pops of unabashed colour into your snow-white days. At the hotel’s peak, you’ll find the penthouses – we like Iseran for its vast Vanoise massif views or grand and spacious Bellevarde. The balcony-toting Val d’Isère and Loft rooms are primed for planning tomorrow’s Alpine adventure.

Spa

After you’ve hit the slopes, hop (or hobble, depending on your day’s runs) to the spa, where tight thighs and lethargic limbs are soothed with massages, an ice bath or sauna. Loosen up with some lengths in the heated pool, or retire to a lounger for a post-treatment kip.

Packing tips

Pair your Perfect Moment ski suit with some oversized shades and fleece-lined snow boots for the ultimate après look.

Children

Welcome; a kids’ club and babysitting are in the works. The penthouses, Glacier and Loft suites, and Olympique rooms can each take an extra bed (€70 a night for ages five–11, €90 for over-12s; breakfast is €25 extra) and connecting rooms are available.

Sustainability efforts

The green-minded group behind this hotel reduce their energy and water consumption by installing sensors, timers and energy-efficient bulbs. Plus, single-use plastic is eschewed, waste is recycled, bath and cleaning products are eco-friendly, and local suppliers are favoured.

Food and Drink

Dress Code

Shed your ski-wear for both and don chic but cosy threads – cashmere knits, shearling boots and woolly gilets will work a charm.

Hotel restaurant

This coming-soon chalet will open its doors to two restaurants: one will be oh-so-Savoyard with trad-Alpine furnishings, a wood-fired oven and all-things-cheese dishes (tartiflette, raclette, fondue); the second is set to be a brightly coloured brasserie, serving sharing plates inspired by the region.

Hotel bar

The hotel’s cocktail pedigree will come into full force at Experimental Cocktail Club, a saloon-style space serving après-ski quenchers, expertly crafted cocktails and light bites. Debrief your day at the bar, or slide up on the sofa for a romantic tête-à-tête.

Last orders

Both restaurants will serve lunch between noon and 2.30pm, and dinner from 7pm until 11pm. Breakfast runs from 7am until 10.30am.

Experimental Chalet Val d'Isère
Route de la Poste
Val d'Isère

France

You’ll find Experimental Chalet Val d’Isère in the heart of the Savoyard ski town, which lies at the foot of the mountainous Vanoise massif.

Planes

Chambéry Airport is two and a half hours away by road; Geneva Airport is over three hours’ drive from the hotel, and staff can arrange transfers from both on request.

Trains

It takes three hours by train, with one connection, to get from Geneva Airport to Bourg-Saint-Maurice station, which is a 40-minute drive from the chalet. Chambéry rail station is a two-hour drive away; hotel transfers can be organised on request.

Automobiles

You’re likely to be busy on the slopes, which are within walking distance or easily reached by bus, and in no need of a car: but if you are bringing your own wheels, there’s a private car park at the hotel (nightly charges apply).

Worth getting out of bed for

Given Experimental Chalet Val d'Isère’s proximity to the pistes, you’ll be hitting the runs in no time. Val d’Isère’s slopes have terrain for beginners and seasonaires alike busy, but for extra mileage, swish over to Tignes; the two resorts share 300 kilometres of pistes. Take your Apine adventures to new heights with heliskiing (over the border in Italy) or paragliding, or perfect your rails and jumps at the snowpark. Although the town is really set up for skiers, you’ll also find cross-country trails, an ice rink and a toboggan area for family-friendly sledging.

Local restaurants

After an appetite-rousing day on the slopes, refuel with pizza, fondue and frites at casual dining spot, Restaurant Le Lodge. The portions at Restaurant L’Alpin are slightly more delicate, but they still impress with their artful presentation and mountain-inspired flavours. LouLou is the place to be seen in Val d’Isère, whether that’s sipping spritzes on its mountain-backdropped terrace or sharing indulgent Italian dishes indoors under the flower-crowned ceiling.

Local bars

Toast to your day with a final pitstop at Cocorico Après Ski - Val d'Isère, where you can thaw out with a beer, live music and maybe some dancing (though calling it that might be a stretch with your boots still on).

Anonymous review

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this soon-to-open ski hotel in Val d’Isère and unpacked their ski pants and wraparound Oakleys, a full account of their mountain break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Experimental Chalet Val d'Isère…

The bon vivants behind Experimental Chalet Val d'Isère know a thing or two about making things look and taste good; their latest endeavour – a coming-soon ski chalet at the heart of Savoie – will be no exception. From lobby to roof, there will be bold Seventies interiors, traditional touches and all the finer frills for post-piste contentment, including two regionally inspired restaurants (with dairy-coma-inducing amounts of cheese), a spiffy spa, and, as you’d expect from Experimental, a star-of-the-show bar.

But, let’s be honest, if you’re in Val d’Isère, it’s probably for the skiing and boarding, and there’s plenty of that: several pistes from the vast Tarentaise ski area shared with Tignes bring you down to town, and Experimental Chalet’s enviable co-ords put you a five-minute walk from the main Solaise gondola. If your ambitions are more leisurely than first-lift-to-last-lift, a clutch of upscale eateries and drinking spots equally nearby are ideal for pitstops – as is your sybaritic basecamp.
