All of the hotel’s communal areas and hallways are wheelchair accessible, and every floor is serviced by a lift. Most of the spa is wheelchair accessible, but unfortunately there are no pool lifts for access to the pools.

Hotel closed

The hotel closes for three weeks each year between mid-April and mid-May.

At the hotel

Ski room and shop, e-bikes to rent, reading room, paid laundry service and free WiFi throughout. In rooms: TV with Chromecast, Bose Bluetooth speaker or Bowers and Wilkins Zeppelin sound system, air-conditioning, electric fireplace, tea- and coffee-making kit, minibar, free bottled water, spa kit with bathrobes and flip flops, and Lefay Spa’s own Tra Suoni e Colori bath products.

Our favourite rooms

All suites have their own terrace, so there aren’t any short straws here. Swing for all-out spoiling in the Exclusive Spa Suite or the Royal Pool and Spa Suite, which each have a private spa area with a sauna and Jacuzzi. The Penthouse and multi-bedroom Residences are ideal if you’re coming with the whole clan.

Poolside

To soak in the sweeping mountainscape, head for the spa’s heated indoor-outdoor pool. There’s also an indoor sports pool and a saltwater whirlpool, both of which are over-16s only. All the resort’s pools are open from 8am to 8pm.

Spa

Heady with botanicals and basking in vast mountain views, the sprawling Lefay Spa is a worthy pilgrimage site for wellness devotees. There are five sauna areas set over four floors, each designed with different wellbeing goals in mind and guided by traditional Chinese medicine and modern practices. You’ll want to waft your way through every circuit (each has its own finely tuned temperature, humidity and aromatherapy), but we’re especially taken with the Red Phoenix area’s Finnish sauna and sensory showers, and the Black Tortoise area’s saltwater lake and grotto. Steaming and soaking aside, there’s a lengthy menu of massages and facials blending eastern and western techniques; spa staff can work treatments into tailored wellness programmes, along with a range of meditation, breathwork, yoga and exercise classes.

Packing tips

Seasonal outdoor gear is a given, but come just as equipped for slowing the tempo – yoga pants always, and perhaps a film camera to prompt you to pause mid-hike and capture mosaic fragments or mediaeval ruins.

Also

When you’ve spent so long in the spa that prune fingers are imminent, continue your wellness quest in the 24-hour fitness centre, which has Technogym cardio and weightlifting equipment, as well as garden-gazing studios for exercise and wellbeing classes.

Pet‐friendly

Four-pawed pals (up to 12kgs) can stay for €50 a day in the designated dog-friendly suites, which overlook the garden and have dog beds and bowls. They’re welcome in the lobby, Lounge Bar and Dolomia, and must have full international health certification. See more pet-friendly hotels in Trentino.

Children

Lefay Resort & Spa Dolomiti welcomes a select number of little Smiths up to 11 years in certain rooms, and has a kids club to entertain them, but the atmosphere at this serene stay is better suited to adults.

Sustainability efforts

Amid a landscape this awe-inspiring, it’s little wonder that care for the environment is a core tenet of the resort. Lefay produces its own renewable biomass energy, and other eco measures are baked into the building design, including high-tech insulation, water-saving taps and rainwater collection for use on the grounds.

Food and Drink

Top Table

Whether a sofa on the rooftop terrace or a two-top by Dolomia’s floor-to-ceiling windows, settle somewhere you can eye the attention-stealing scenery.

Dress Code

At Dolomia, preserve your post-spa serenity with something soft and drapey; amp up the glamour for Grual.

Hotel restaurant

Awe-inspiring alpine views are a given at Dolomia, the resort’s laidback all-day restaurant. The rest, dear diner, is up to you, with three menus to choose from: a handful of daily specials, a seasonal lineup of hearty plates spotlighting fresh local produce, or the Lefay Spa menu, which features dishes specially designed by the resort’s wellness masterminds to be balanced and health-focused.

Fine-dining restaurant Grual takes its name from the mountain that backdrops the resort, and its design cues from the thick forest that swathes the slopes. Silhouetted trees, foliage and flickering firelight lend the restaurant an air of enchantment, but the real magic here is in chef Matteo Maenza’s tasting menus, which weave together the native flavours of three altitudes – the high mountain, alpine pastures and the valley floor. Dishes follow the seasons, but you might find venison with foraged cherries, Arctic char with wild mushrooms or chocolate mousse with mountain pepper ice cream cropping up. And, if you’d rather chart your own course, an à la carte menu is also available.

Hotel bar

Warm, lantern-like lighting makes the Lounge Bar a cosy den for a cocktail, set against views of the pine-blanketed mountainside and the village twinkling below. Or let the scenery lure you out to the Sky Lounge, a fire-warmed rooftop spot for stargazing on a loveseat. In summer, the Pool Bar is a post-paddle pitstop for view-blessed light bites.

Last orders

Dolomia serves breakfast from 7.30am to 11am, lunch from 12.30pm to 2.30pm and dinner from 7pm to 9.30pm. Dinner is served at Grual from 7.30pm to 9pm. The Lounge Bar and Sky Lounge pour from 10am to 1am, and in summer, the Pool Bar is open 10am to 6pm.

Room service

You can order dishes to your room round the clock – the main room service menu is available from 7am to 11pm, with a curated night dining menu between 11pm and 7am.

Lefay Resort & Spa Dolomiti crowns the peak-framed village of Pinzolo in Trentino’s Rendena Valley.

The hotel can arrange transfers from any of these on request, with price varying depending on the type of car. Transfers from Verona, Milan’s three airports and Venice Marco Polo can all be arranged.

Trento train station is an hour’s drive away and has links around Italy’s major cities, as well as routes to Munich, Vienna and Salzburg. The hotel can arrange transfers.

Automobiles

You won’t need your own wheels to hit the slopes – transfers to the Pinzolo ski lifts are included – but bring a car if you’re keen to explore further afield in Trentino. The resort has three private car parks, one outdoors and two indoors, with electric car charging points and a free 24-hour valet service.

Other

There’s a helipad a five-minute drive from the resort. Transfers can be arranged on request, for an additional cost.

Worth getting out of bed for

The Rendena Valley and wider Adamello Brenta Nature Park is an all-seasons playground for avid adventurers. In winter, the Madonna di Campiglio ski area comes alive, with 150 kilometres of slopes and four snowboard parks, as well as snowshoeing paths, ski mountaineering and cross-country skiing. In the warmer months, you can criss-cross the alpine landscape on hiking and biking trails.

Daily group outings set off from the hotel, including hikes and e-bike tours led by local mountain guides along routes that might pass waterfalls, rivers or a historic hermitage. Join the weekly wine and cheese tasting at a family-owned shop in Pinzolo, or go foraging for your own fare in alpine meadows. If you’d rather strike out solo, staff can provide maps and route guidance.

Private options include mountain biking tours and hikes personalised to your group. Up the adrenalin with rock climbing and a via ferrata route tailored to your abilities, or traverse a stream through rocky valley terrain on a canyoning expedition. And after all that exertion, a tour of a local winery sounds just the ticket.

Local restaurants

For an unfussy taste of Trentino, make your way to Mildas, a family-run spot where time-tested local recipes are served in the atmospheric chapel of a mediaeval monastery. The restaurant is open from July to September each year.

Local bars

Rustic wine bar Incantina woos with sommelier-picked bottles from small local producers, paired with a menu of antipasti and simple, traditional dishes.

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this wellbeing-boosting hotel in the Dolomites and unpacked their Salomon boots and botanical serums, a full account of their holistic break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Lefay Resort & Spa Dolomiti in Trentino…

It’s not surprising, we suppose – with panoramic views over an alpine valley, it's easy to have a sense of perspective – that Lefay Resort & Spa Dolomiti is all about balance. High-octane days spent slopeside go hand-in-hand with stints in the colossal spa (which is designed to harmonise yin and yang); and, in the restaurants, dishes are both decadent and nutritionally complete. Equilibrium is etched into each part of this holistic stay.

Just one small snag: enveloped in all this indulgence, ‘everything in moderation’ flies out of the window. Wandering in a wildflower-scented haze, from sauna to salt grotto to scenery-peeping pools, questions like ‘how long have I been here?’ and ‘where are the children?’ (they’re at the kids’ club, don’t worry) slip away. Venture out and you’re immersed in the Dolomites landscape, discovering trails that end at lulling waterfalls and hidden hermitages. By the time you’re tucking into course 12 of the evening tasting menu, you may well start to wonder if actually, this place is about going all in.
