Setting

Sonoran Desert wilderness

The desert-dotted retreats at Miraval Arizona Resort & Spa might be kitted out with relaxation-inducing details like meditation pillows, whirlpool tubs, and Tibetan singing bowls, but most of your recuperation will take place outside your room. Tucson’s Santa Catalina Mountains form a ruggedly restorative backdrop to the resort’s expertly curated wellness offerings, extending from state-of-the-art spa facilities to equine therapy stables. Personal tech use is kept to a minimum, so come prepared to swap screens for starry Sonoran skies.

Our favourite rooms

Designed for between-treatments downtime, the rooms, suites, retreats and villas at Miraval Arizona are restful casita-style spaces scattered along cactus-peppered pathways. Choose Villa Dalis for one of the resort’s most secluded spots, which enjoys almost as much indoor space as outdoors (we call this the golden ratio, especially once the sun starts to set over the mountain peaks). The Desert Sky Suites’ elevated terraces are a stargazer’s dream, and the three-bedroom Gratitude Retreat is a serene, stretch-out space for groups to gather around the fire pit and unwind.

Poolside

There are three cooling-off options to choose from; the splash-shaped Oasis pool (plus hot tub on the lower terrace) is the main swimming-and-sunbathing spot. The lap pool at the Body Mindfulness Center attracts keen front-crawlers, so be sure to sport your more athletic swimwear around here. The third smaller, canopy-draped pool near Yucca Cabana, is reserved for Miraval exclusive spa services. Each pool is saltwater and comes with lunar-like views across the desertscape.

Spa

As the relaxation (and digital device-free) hub of the resort, Miraval’s Life in Balance spa is where you’ll spend most of your decompression time; whether for a manuka-honey manicure, Ayurvedic full-body treatment, or aromatherapy massage. The wellness menu is as extensive as you’d expect from 30,000-square-foot facilities, so we’d recommend booking in at least a month before your visit to make the most of everything on offer. The desert surroundings have inspired the soft amber lighting, sand-hued interiors, local botanicals like prickly pear and purple sage, and the signature Sonoran Monsoon experience which aims to recreate the calm-after-the-storm feeling through mud masks, warming linen wraps, and hydrating mountain arnica salve. The steam room, sauna, heated pool, yoga studios, beauty salon, and indoor-outdoor lounge areas are yours to drift between while cocooned in fluffy robes and slippers. The 24-hour Body Mindfulness Center hosts an array of fitness classes, personal training, and strength workshops to suit all athletic abilities, including Pilates, aerial yoga, and cardio drumming.

Packing tips

Leave the tech at home and come with an unplug-to-reconnect mindset, as you can only use digital devices in designated zones around the resort. Ample athleisure wear and some sturdy boots are must-brings.

Also

Complete the online intentions-setting quiz ahead of arrival, and receive tailored suggestions from the resort’s experience planners.

Children

Geared towards recharging grown-up batteries, Miraval Arizona is for over-18s only.

Sustainability efforts

Not only is Miraval Arizona Resort & Spa completely powered by renewable energy sources, its rooms and wellness areas are stocked with plant-based, biodegradable and organic products. You’ll be given a reusable water bottle on check-in to fill up from the hydration stations around the resort, and any food waste from the restaurant is collected and composted in the on-site garden. If you’re travelling to the resort for a meeting or event, your emissions will be offset through Miraval’s carbon-neutral scheme which funds reforestation and community-based projects in the Amazon.

Top Table

Cactus Flower’s patio puts Santa Catalina’s rugged peaks in full, glorious view.

Dress Code

Switch between Lululemon looks and your spa robes by day, and matching linen sets for dinner.

Hotel restaurant

Both dining outlets at Miraval Arizona promote mindful eating and conscious cooking, gathering ingredients from the resort’s garden and local farms. Cactus Flower Restaurant is a light, nature-inspired space overlooking the Santa Catalina Mountains, lined with leather booths separated by ceiling-height olive trees. The all-day menu kicks off with scrambled tofu and a house avocado spread, moving onto plant-based burgers and baby kale caesar salads for lunch. Reservations are required for dinner, and any allergies or dietaries will be noted in advance and added to your nutrition profile. Palm Court Café is a sociable spot for refuelling between treatments, with freshly made grab-and-go options like prickly pear iced tea and lemon-glazed blueberry scones.

Hotel bar

There are two (the resort believes in balance, after all). The dark panelling and cognac-colored stools set a sophisticated tone in Coyote Moon Bar & Lounge, which serves chilled glasses of wine, craft cocktails and nibbles until 9pm. There’s a more relaxed bar by the Oasis Pool if you’re in need of a daytime pick-me-up.

Last orders

Breakfast is from 6am to 10am, lunch from 11.30am to 2pm, and dinner from 5pm to 9pm (hours subject to change based on season).

Room service

Order nutritious refreshments to your room between 7.30am and 9pm.

Worth getting out of bed for

Moving your body and rebalancing the mind come in many forms at Miraval Arizona, with an ever-changing calendar of daily activities to choose from. The resort’s wellbeing experts guide you through gratitude journaling, deep-sleep therapy, aerial yoga, tarot readings, mandala painting, and all manner of grounding experiences throughout your stay. You might just discover your dosha, or align your chakras on a crystal alchemy sound journey. The educational nutrition program covers everything from smoothie-making to healthy gut workshops and mastering your metabolism, with the chance to visit the on-site farm and beehives to learn more about Arizona’s unusual yet bountiful terrain. Adventurous pursuits could see you ziplining across the Sonoran Desert, tightroping at the resort’s challenge course, hiking and biking the trails around Mount Lemmon (the highest peak in the Santa Catalina Mountains), hiking across the rugged landscape, trying your hand at archery, or joining a birding tour. For the ultimate bonding experience, improve your communication skills during equine therapy and meditation sessions at Purple Sage Ranch, led by resident horse-whisperer Lucinda Vette.

Local restaurants

The resort’s health-focused culinary offerings leave little reason to stray into the Sonoran outback in search of other food-and-watering holes.

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this unplugged wellness resort in Arizona and unpacked their clay face masks and herbal tea, a full account of their battery-recharging break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Miraval Arizona Resort & Spa in the Sonoran Desert…

In the foothills of the Santa Catalina Mountains lies Miraval Arizona Resort & Spa, a family-owned dude ranch turned world-renowned (and Oprah-approved) wellness retreat. By day, hummingbirds and butterflies flit between plunge pools as you meander past saguaro cacti to an open-air spa cabana for a honeysuckle-, sage- and wolfberry-infused treatment (jars of the locally harvested elixir are yours to take home). Spiritual ceremonies unfold across yurts and stone circles, and a herd of therapy horses keeps you company for outdoor meditation.

The early evening is when the Sonoran skies and sun-kissed peaks really come alive — especially during eclipse season, or when the summer monsoons bring fiery sunsets and the lingering smell of rain (locals will tell you that this musky scent is released by the native creosote plant). The proximity to Mount Lemmon’s observatory and surrounding dark-sky territory adds stargazing to your bedtime routine, enhanced by tips from the resident dream and sleep specialists to lull you into your deepest, sweetest slumber.
