Our favourite rooms

Honeymooners should ask for Overwater Villa 51: it's the last villa at the end of the jetty, so there'll be no foot traffic to disrupt the romance. If you don't mind passers-by, Beach Pool Villa 6 normally has a prime beachfront position.

Poolside

The 44-metre freshwater infinity pool overlooks the ocean and is flanked by chill-out areas, sunloungers and swaying palm trees. Those wanting a peaceful paddle should seek out the other pool in the secluded spa.

Spa

Masseurs over at the Vidhun Spa – a tucked-away complex of five thatch-roofed treatment villas and a courtyard lounge – mix their restorative potions with the atoll’s natural herbs and spices for magical massages and transformative treatments.

Packing tips

This is your cue to invest in an underwater camera.

Also

Thrills can be had at the activity centre: explore the kaleidoscopic coral of the house reef with guided snorkelling, head into open water on an excursion to the equator’s great circle or have a castaway experience with a trip to an uninhabited island.

Children

Children are welcome, but the hotel's best suited to adults or couples. Baby cots and extra beds (for under-12s) are available on request, for free. Babysitting and kids’ activities are also available, if you do decide to bring little ones along.

Sustainability efforts

Having been recognised in the Maldives for their sustainability efforts, Park Hyatt Hadahaa is committed to protecting and preserving its reef, island and atoll. Through working with Green Globe and EarthCheck they’ve certified their practices and ensure everything – and everyone – on the island is held to account. Villas were constructed carefully, without digging into the land beneath the overwater villas to preserve surrounding reefs. Hotel slippers are made from jute, meaning they decompose entirely in the sand; motorised watersports are banned to protect the wildlife, and they have a strict no-bleaching policy on their reef. They’re also part of Reef & Me – a project which educates local school children about underwater ecosystems – and they organise talks with schools on neighbouring islands as part of the programme. The kitchen has access to an impressive organic garden, but also works closely with local fishermen and farmers on a nearby agriculture island called Kondey, to ensure vegetables, fruit and seafood are all sourced responsibly.

Food and Drink

Top Table

For dinner á deux, arrange a private dining experience. Your table will be set up in your choice of locations: on the beach, alone on the jetty, under the spa’s garden pavilions or on the rooftop terrace, for example.

Dress Code

Bold and bright: Pucci and a pedicure.

Hotel restaurant

The Dining Room overlooks the come-hither pool. Begin your day by scrolling through the à la carte menu – we love the waffles with berry compote and maple syrup, or go local with the Maldivian omelette. The Island Grill is an open-kitchen eatery where you can dine with the sand under your feet. Serving dinner daily, expect regionally inspired dishes and fresh seafood prepared in the wood-burning oven or on a traditional grill. For sea-facing fare, stilted-overwater-restaurant Koi at the Drift, pairs Japanese cuisine with an impressive selection of saké. Or, if you’re seeking something a little different, the Chef’s Garden Treehouse sits five-metres above the shore and dishes plant-based meals made with ingredients picked from the hotel’s organic gardens.

Hotel bar

Beneath star-studded skies, snag a cabana at the beachside bar to enjoy a pre- or post-dinner tipple. If you fancy an off-menu libation, simply ask the clever bar staff and watch as they shake, muddle and strain your boozy concoction. Light snacks and salads are available at the bar throughout the day.

Last orders

Breakfast at the Dining Room is 7.30am to 10.30am; lunch is noon to 3pm, and dinner at all four restaurants is 7pm to 10.30pm (10pm at the Chef’s Garden Treehouse). The bar pours from 10am till late.

Room service

Choices from the set menus and favourites from the Dining Room’s lunch and dinner menu – Maldivian dishes, soups, salads and desserts – are available 24 hours.

Worth getting out of bed for

The house reef at Park Hyatt Maldives Hadahaa offers some of the archipelago’s most eye-bogglingly beautiful snorkelling; the best place to splash around is the drop off between the arrival jetty and the water villas. You can either rent the snorkelling equipment and go on your own or go for a guided snorkelling trip with the resident marine biologist. Night snorkelling is also on offer. The hotel has loads of organised activities that will give you a real flavour of the area. Have a cookery class in the open kitchen, and learn about the best marinade for fresh fish, and how to prepare and apply it. You can also go out on a dhoni with the marine biologist and learn all about the local fish (while attempting to catch a few), followed by a cookery demonstration in the open kitchen at the Island Grill. Take part in one of the mojito mixology classes, go on a starlight cruise and join the free sunrise or sunset yoga sessions, held four times a week. There’s also a weekly cocktail party on the beach each Saturday, attended by guests and staff. Make the most of your watery surroundings by going dolphin watching. For dryer moments, dip into the library's stash of tomes, or ask staff set-up a private open-air cinema for alfresco movie nights. Staff can organise boat trips to neighbouring islands. And leave time to have a treatment in the Vidhun Spa (solo or for two),which uses traditional Maldivian healing techniques and local ingredients including sea salt, spices, orchids and papaya.

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this private island hotel in Huvadhu Atoll and unpacked their Pucci swimwear and Havaianas, a full account of their luxury beach break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside from Park Hyatt Maldives Hadahaa…

Forget your shoes – and your worries – the moment you step onto the pristine white shores of Park Hyatt Maldives Hadahaa; this is a private-island castaway experience that even Tom Hanks wouldn’t want to leave. Forgoing traditional Maldivian design, the remote island (accessible only by a domestic plane and speedboat) is dotted with sleek and contemporary villas that are a masterclass in uncluttered design and muted hues. At this tropical hideaway, neighboured only by the vast expanse of sea and sky, guests spend days feasting on the spectacular breakfast spread, snoozing on sunloungers and sipping on coconut iced tea. When the temperature of this near-equator luxury resort calls for cooling off, it’s only a few flipper-clad steps to the azure waters and their underwater world of darting fish, cruising turtles and eye-catching coral. It’s time to don life-vests and abandon ship – we have a feeling we’ll be here a while.
