Our favourite rooms

Elegantly dressed in understated neutrals and motifs that subtly echo the castle’s history, most of the rooms, suites, houses and chalets at Rosewood Schloss Fuschl let the perfectly framed views of the lake do the talking. The opulent two-bedroom Lakeview suite in the Waldhaus building offers the full shebang, with a private balcony. Chalets have a fireplace, private sauna and butler service and some of the larger residences can sleep up to eight.

Poolside

Asaya Spa centres around a 20-metre-long outdoor infinity pool: edged by sunloungers and canopied day-beds, this heated saltwater pool is open year round from 7am until 10pm daily, with pool service available between May and October. A second, indoor pool at the spa is also open daily and, like its counterpart, is heated and child-friendly until 4pm.

Spa

A sense of place is intrinsic to Rosewood hotels and the Asaya Spa at Schloss Fuschl is no exception: herbs are grown or foraged locally – even the salts it uses are Austrian, complemented by OTO, Evidents and Dr Barbara Sturm spa ranges. Between 9am and 9pm, you can check in for a massage, scrub or facial in one of its eight treatment rooms (including three doubles), or unwind in one of its three saunas (including one for women only), its steam room or two pools (indoors and out). An on-site hair salon is at your disposal, and you can keep to your fitness regime at the hotel’s 24-hour studio, kitted out with Technogym equipment and a Peloton Bike. Check out the weekly programme of group yoga, pilates and aqua gym, too.

Packing tips

You’ll want threads for activities from yoga to running to hiking, but leave room to bring home some mountain honey or bottles of grüner veltliner.

Also

For some rooms, in-room beauty treatments are available on request. Golfers should check out the Eugendorf and Mondsee courses which are both around 19 km from the hotel.

Pet‐friendly

Dogs are welcome for €50 a night which includes bed, bowl and toys. Please note that the Asaya Spa and most of the restaurants are pooch-free zones. See more pet-friendly hotels in Salzburg Mountains.

Children

Very welcome; family packages and interconnecting rooms are available, cots can be added to all rooms, and rollaways can be added to some. The pools are child-friendly until 4pm; there’s a selection of toys, and babysitting can be arranged with notice.

Sustainability efforts

The hotel sources meat, fish, dairy and vegetables from farms and suppliers located within a 100-kilometre radius. The majority of flowers used in the hotel’s displays are sourced regionally, and the Schloss Fuschl bee colony supports local honey production. Lake water is used for heating and cooling, and, rather than hog the limelight, this starry castle comes with low-impact lighting, designed with local wildlife in mind.

Food and Drink

Top Table

A lake-eyeing table at Seeterrasse is the stuff of idyllic summer evenings.

Dress Code

You’ll want smarter threads for fine dining at Das Schloss Restaurant, where there’s a smart-casual dress code; otherwise, anything that shows off your alpine glow will suffice, with the option to add chic layers for cooler lakeside evenings.

Hotel restaurant

Dishes that celebrate Austria’s culinary heritage with a strong focus on fresh locally sourced ingredients unite all restaurants here. Fine dining spot, Das Schloss plates up authentic Salzkammergut cuisine, including locally caught freshwater fish and an impressive selection of wines. Vinothek is the place you tumble into post-hike for wine, beer or hearty local Austrian classics such as pickled fish, boiled beef or bauernkrapfen (also known as farmer’s doughnuts) in a casual setting. Or opt for afternoon strudel and loose-leaf brews at the Sisi Tea Salon

Overlooking the calming waters, Seeterrasse is a scenic alfresco spot for international dishes. Closer still, the See Club features a seafood bar where you can enjoy an array of grilled fish and other delectable freshwater morsels. Indulge in a variety of freshly prepared dishes while taking in the serene lake views. The bar offers a delightful culinary experience that complements the luxurious beach club atmosphere, making it the perfect spot for a leisurely meal or a relaxed evening by the water.

Hotel bar

Vinothek has all the cellar appeal wine lovers are looking for. Schloss Bar is the hotel’s mainstay for drinks pre- and post-dinner, with hand-painted walls by Austrian painter Marie Hartig offering the perfect backdrop for classic cocktails. For aperitifs, lingering on sunny afternoons at See Club with a cold beer has its merits, and the Sisi Tea Salon serves tipples as well as brews. For warming dark spirits, schnapps and wines, check out the hotel’s Whisky Room and Grüner Salon

Worth getting out of bed for

A brisk run along the lake, paddleboarding, kayaking, hiking and cycling are just a few of the ways to savour the clean mountain air and staggering scenic beauty at Rosewood Schloss Fuschl.

Book yourself in for sunrise yoga, lake view aqua aerobics or a few of the curated experiences that promise to connect you deeper to the region’s heritage. The Alpine Herb Adventure teaches you about the local plant life, birds and agriculture, or you can combine your mountain hike with an immersive epicurean experience at Alpine Hut Lärchenhütte, where you’ll feast on local flavours, Alpine high tea, strudel and schnaps.

Visits to local artisans showcase centuries-old craftmanship: take a rare peek into Alois Kirchtag’s umbrella workshop, or slip into something a little more traditional with a private fitting of dirndl or lederhosen.

Nearby Salzburg offers all the sightseeing, shopping and schnitzel you could want from a city break in Austria: a seat at the Salzburg Music Festival, a contemporary art exhibition at Museum der Moderne, and the baroque brilliance (and Fraulein Maria fame) of Mirabell Palace and Garden.

Local restaurants

You’re unlikely to stray far from Rosewood Schloss Fuschl’s clutch of dining spots, but for a change of scene, take a 15-minute drive to the pretty village of St. Gilgen on Lake Wolfgang and Gasthof zur Post to feast on fresh-from-the-forest porcini mushrooms, asparagus, local game or lake-fresh fish.

In Salzburg, Restaurant Brunnauer offers elegant mod-European plates, such as caper-flecked tuna and veal, pea cream-topped crayfish, and saddle of deer in morel sauce, best enjoyed on the outdoor terrace overlooking Fortress Hohensalzburg.

In the heart of the old town, St. Peter Stiftskulinarium claims centuries-long staying power but, age aside, has a pretty courtyard for brunch or a lunch of Austrian and Mediterranean dishes.

Local cafés

Stop off for a sweet treat in the walnut-panelled and chandeliered Cafe Tomaselli in Salzburg old town. Established in 1884, Cafe Konditorei Fürst is famed for its Mozartkugeln (dark chocolate balls filled with marzipan, pistachio and nougat), although their coffee and apple strudel also hit the spot.

Anonymous review

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this salubrious stay in the Salzburg mountains and unpacked their hiking boots and Mozartkugeln, a full account of their lakeside break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Rosewood Schloss Fuschl…

Some castles are built for defence, some are aristo-fuelled folly – but Rosewood Schloss Fuschl is neither: this brilliantly sane bastion of style has landed on the shores of Lake Fuschl to delight discerning sybarites (and it doesn’t need defending…). Backdropped by Alps, this luxurious bolthole pairs sublime natural scenery with fit-for-royalty comfort. Interiors blend traditional Austrian charm with Rosewood’s trademark contemporary finesse and are matched in polish by the spellbinding views – where the only thing competing for your gaze is the occasional kayaker gliding across the glassy lake.

It’s a level of serenity we’re happy to get on board with, but what a waste of your idyllic Alpine setting that would be. You could be paddleboarding at dawn, cycling or running along pine-flanked trails or marvelling at the mountain scenery on a hot-air balloon trip. Plus, enchanting Salzburg is a mere waltz away. Back at base, guided meditation classes, tranquil soaks in the saltwater infinity pool, and soul-soothing herbal massages at Asaya Spa lower the tempo. And the hotel’s regional cuisine offers a symphony of freshly-foraged flavours, too. A first-class, overhauled fortress, Rosewood’s schloss is our gain.
