The sweet spot

Setting

Coastal Calheta

Prepare for a sugar rush at oceanfront Saccharum Resort & Spa: this oh-so-sweet resort was once a sugar cane mill, a motif that seasons each biophilic floor. You’ll find eye candy at the beach club or rooftop infinity pool, and dulcet tones at the holistic spa. Whisper sweet nothings in a water-facing suite or over a starry-eyed supper at three Mediterranean restaurants. There’s a glut of rum-pouring bars, but exclusive area, the Club, is the icing on the cake.

Our favourite rooms

Our hot tip for finding your balcony-blessed bedroom at Saccharum Resort & Spa is to look up – the room numbers are illuminated on the ceilings above the doorways. Once located, you might never want to leave: ocean views adorn most rooms and the earthy interiors are a contemporary nod to the hotel’s mill heritage. Pillow talk in an Ocean Room is soundtracked by the waves below, or rev up the romance in a SPE Ocean Pool Suite with dips à deux in the plunge pool or freestanding bath tub.

Poolside

Take your pick from five picturesque pools, three of which are on the eighth floor: the hotel’s crowning jewel is the rooftop pool with its horizon-blending infinity edge and stellar sunset views. There’s also a children’s pool where little Smiths can splash about, and a tucked-away heated indoor pool, framed by floor-to-ceiling windows that overlook the ocean. On the second floor, you’ll find an adults-only pool with a peaceful sunlounger-lined terrace, and there’s a second indoor pool in the spa.

Spa

Saccharum Spa soothes with ayurvedic rituals and therapies, using organic Ila products, and holistic treatments feature chakra healing, Himalayan salt body scrubs, made-for-two massages and CBD oil facials. Echoing the rest of the resort, the space is inspired by the surrounding landscape: creek-like winding corridors, cooling spaces and sugar cane-inspired structures. Plus, an ice fountain, halotherapy room, sauna, steam room and sensorial showers will keep your serene post-treatment bubble intact.

Packing tips

A sweet tooth for eating up the sugar cane-inspired interiors and, if the time of year is right, a pair of binoculars for chancing your luck at whale-spotting from your bedroom’s balcony.

Food and Drink

Top Table

Each of the three restaurants has an ocean-facing terrace, which you’ll want to make a beeline for.

Dress Code

Dressed for the day at Engenho; sun-kissed and still-wet at Trapiche, and in your finest threads for Alambique.

Hotel restaurant

The resort’s four dining spots nod to Saccharum's past life as a sugar cane mill and the industrial interiors at Engenho are adorned with history-evoking artefacts. At breakfast, you’ll find a cornucopia of day-starting treats, which are best relished on the infinity pool-toting terrace; come evening, Mediterranean-influenced fare impresses. Dinner-only Alambique is named after the ancient tool used to distil sugarcane into aguardente, and this fine-dining restaurant celebrates Madeira with its five-course tasting menus themed around the sea and mountains. Poolside Trapiche serves light bites and drinks alongside sunset-washed coastal vistas, plus there’s a fourth eatery in the Club, where guests staying on the SPE package can enjoy breakfast and all-day snacks.

Hotel bar

You won’t want for watering holes: there are four here. Rooftop Fly Lounge Bar (5.30pm–10.30pm) sets jaws dropping with its surf and turf locale; the menu of Madeiran wine has a similar effect. There’s also daily afternoon tea and live music. Place-to-be Calhau Beach Club (10.30am–9.30pm) is set on the pebbled shores just over the road from Saccharum; you’ll come for umami flavours, jugs of sangría and tropical beats, and stay for the tangerine-tinged sunsets. Set in the lobby, Rhum Bar (10.30am–12.30pm; 4.30pm–6.30pm) is your well-oiled host for sampling the island’s traditional spirit, and at the adults-only pool, Garapa Bar (10am–6.30pm) energises with coffees, fresh smoothies and frozen cocktails.

Last orders

At Engenho, breakfast is 7am–10.30am and dinner is 6.30pm–9.30pm; dinner at Alambique is 7pm–10pm; at Trapiche, lunch is 10am–6.30pm and dinner is 7.30pm–10.30pm. The Club is open 7.30am–7pm.

Room service

Dishes can be delivered to your door from a separate menu around the clock.

Worth getting out of bed for

If you can resist the pull of the soporific sunloungers around the pools, you’ll find plenty of community-inspired activities at Saccharum Resort & Spa. Head to the farmers’ market before preparing lunch in a local food workshop, get green-fingered with a gardening session, shake things up with a mixology class or practise your pronunciation of saúde (cheers) in a Portuguese lesson. You can learn how to tend to the fruit at the banana cropping experience, or visit the Engenha da Calheta, a sugar cane factory where you’ll try traditional honey-infused treats. The ever-energetic can master t’ai chi, hatha yoga or pilates, plus staff can arrange driving tours to top Calheta sights, such as viewpoints, churches and piers.

Local restaurants

Fans of fresh seafood won’t be disappointed at harbourfront Marina Azul Restaurante, where black tiger prawns and sharing rice dishes are menu stand-outs. At Golden Calheta, days start with sun-kissed brunches before rolling into lingering lunches of Portuguese tapas and other traditional bites. You’ll find Calheta Green in the mountains above the resort, where it impresses with hearty hike-fuelling fare and verdant views.

Local bars

Start your night strong with the rum-centric cocktails at Magnolia Contemporary Bar & Restaurant, which celebrates the island’s spirit in both senses.

Anonymous review

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this all-frills hotel in Calheta and unpacked their sugar-cane honey and local rum, a full account of their oceanfront break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Saccharum Resort & Spa in Madeira…

You don't have to be an architecture aficionado to marvel at the striking contemporary exterior of Saccharum Resort & Spa, an industrial-inspired resort that pays homage to its former life as a mill and sugar cane.

This oceanfront honeypot also takes colour cues from the local landscape: Madeira’s mountains backdrop the outdoor pools and restaurant terraces; the stand-out spa uses nature-referencing motifs; earthy hues and sugar cane details characterise the designer-styled rooms, and the three Mediterranean restaurants spotlight seasonal produce, which is sourced close to home (just-picked herbs and vegetables come from the kitchen garden).

Honouring the hotel’s island locale isn’t solely achieved through biophilic design: local community and tradition is celebrated through noteworthy experiences, such as banana cropping, cooking classes or visits to an old sugar cane mill. But your nature-swathed surroundings are just as moreish, admired from the plant-lined rooftop pool, the exclusive Club area or your room’s ocean-breeze-kissed balcony. Sweet dreams…
