More details

Also

Given the outdoor – and largely undisturbed – nature of this camp, areas of the resort may be difficult if you have limited mobility.

Please note

Food isn’t allowed in any of the tents here, in line with Under Canvas’s Mindful Approach to your pristine surroundings.

Hotel closed

Under Canvas Great Smoky Mountains closes for the season from 3 December 2024 until 2 April 2025.

At the hotel

Nightly campfires, board games, Lululemon yoga mats and blocks to borrow, refillable aluminum water bottles, water refill stations, free hot drinks, guest experience coordinators and a small boutique. In rooms: USB battery packs, battery-powered fans, wood-fired stove, lanterns and organic Essential Oils bath products.

Our favourite rooms

All tents have toasty wood-burning stoves and private sun-dosed terraces, meaning you’ll be in clover whatever the weather. But if you want to spy constellations from under the covers, bag one of the Stargazer tents which has a viewing window, perfectly positioned above the pillows.

Packing tips

The camp falls into quiet time after 10pm, so be sure to bring a good book (and a pair of star-spotting binoculars) to cozy up with.

Also

There’s no WiFi here – and limited cell service – and you won’t find any TVs around, meaning evenings tend to be filled with stargazing and fireside music and s’mores.

Pet‐friendly

Your dog’s welcome to join you for $25 a night, but he’ll have to stay on his lead around the grounds and can’t be left alone in the tent. See more pet-friendly hotels in Smoky Mountains.

Children

Welcome; there’s no kids’ club or babysitting, but adjacent kids’ tents and a programme of family-friendly activities included with your stay make Under Canvas an all-ages favorite.

Sustainability efforts

As part of the company’s Mindful Approach to development and operations, Under Canvas has built its camp to integrate with the Great Smoky Mountains’ natural landscapes, ensuring environmental impacts are limited so flora and fauna can continue to thrive. Day-to-day runnings are designed to minimize light pollution, waste and water usage: there’s no WiFi and electricity has been replaced with rechargeable battery packs, which power fans and provide USB ports; bathrooms are low-flow and stocked with organic, all-natural bath products; reusable water bottles are provided to cut single-use plastic, and the cutlery is biodegradable and compostable. Meals served at the restaurant are also made with produce sourced from local suppliers wherever possible. Under Canvas works closely with global non-profit, the Nature Conservancy, to educate and help mitigate the threats of climate change.

Worth getting out of bed for

Guest experience coordinators take the reins at Under Canvas Great Smoky Mountains, and they’ll be more than happy to suggest local adventures and lesser known trails to satisfy your wishlist. Sitting right at the entrance to the Smokies means exploring its majestic mountains is high on the agenda: don your favorite Patagonias and head off on a guided hike along one of the many surrounding trails (some ending up at the Ramsey Cascades, others at Clingmans Dome), or take a driving tour and ogle all its hotspots in an afternoon. White-water rafting awaits along the Pigeon River’s rapids if you prefer your forays with a hit of adrenalin, and there are outdoor games, fireside guitar sessions and more included with your stay back at basecamp.

To either side of you, the towns of Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg are filled with family-owned boutiques and a distinct Southern charm. Odes to bluegrass, country and folk music are widespread in Tennessee, but when you’re just a 20-minute drive away, it’d be remiss not to mention Dollywood – a theme park dedicated to all things Dolly Parton.

Local restaurants

Designed to satisfy pre- and post-adventure appetites, a regionally inspired menu back at base means you’re unlikely to dine outside of camp.

In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Under Canvas Great Smoky Mountains…

Folklore and strange superstitions have a long association with the Appalachian Mountains, but these days its expanse is better known for sweeping scenery, a patchwork of cultures and awe-prompting national parks – one of them, North Carolina and Tennessee’s Smokies. It’s here, on the Volunteer State side, that you’ll find Under Canvas Great Smoky Mountains, a 182-acre property that’s adding layers of luxury to its tents. Interiors impress with rustic touches, wood furnishings (there’s even an over-pillow skylight in some to stargaze from) and blanket-draped king-size beds. A programme of activities is included with your stay, and planned-ahead adventures help you make the most of your locale. Take to one of the park’s many hiking trails, and visit waterfalls, wildflower fields and trout-filled lakes. The neighboring towns of Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg throw in a spoonful of Southern hospitality, while Graham crackers and Gibson guitars make for convivial evening campfires – the ideal time to revisit a few old Appalachian mountain tales…
