More details

Also

Given the outdoor – and largely undisturbed – nature of this camp, areas of the resort may be difficult if you have limited mobility.

Please note

Food isn’t allowed in any of the tents here, in line with Under Canvas’s Mindful Approach to your pristine surroundings.

Hotel closed

The camp will close on 30 September 2024. For 2025, it will open from 1 May until 29 September.

At the hotel

Lululemon mats and blocks to borrow, acoustic guitars to borrow, campfires with s’mores, refillable aluminum water bottles, water refill stations, free hot drinks, board games, guest experience coordinators and a small boutique. In tents: USB battery packs, battery-powered fans, a wood-burning stove, lanterns and organic Essential Oils bath products.

Our favourite rooms

Go for a romantic Stargazer tent – each has a sky-spying window above its king-size bed – and cozy up under the cosmos. Families can spread out with a Suite tent or choose a Stargazer or Deluxe tent with an adjacent Kids’ Tent.

Packing tips

You’ll want outdoorsy threads that can cater to hikes among the rockscapes as well as river-based adventures, and enough reading material, along with cards or travel Scrabble, to entertain after dusk.

Also

here’s no WiFi here, and you won’t find any TVs around, meaning evenings tend to be filled with stargazing, fireside music and s’mores.

Pet‐friendly

Four-legged friends are welcome to stay in all tents, for $25 each a night, but must be kept with you (and on a lead) at all times. Please note that at Mount Rushmore National Memorial, there are two dedicated walking areas that you’ll need to stick to. See more pet-friendly hotels in Mount Rushmore.

Children

Welcome; there’s no kids’ club or babysitting, but spacious Suite tents, a choice of options with adjacent kids’ tents, and family-friendly activities included with your stay make Under Canvas Mount Rushmore an all-ages favorite.

Sustainability efforts

As part of the company’s Mindful Approach to development and operations, Under Canvas Mount Rushmore has been designed to minimize disturbance, maximize open spaces, and flow with the natural topography of the land. Pull-chain showers and low-flow toilets reduce water usage; cleaning and bath products are selected to reduce damage to the environment, and low-level lighting limits light pollution. There’s no WiFi and electricity has been replaced with rechargeable battery packs, which power fans and provide USB ports; reusable water bottles are provided to cut single-use plastic, and the cutlery is biodegradable and compostable. In addition, Under Canvas works closely with global non-profit, the Nature Conservancy, to educate and help mitigate the threats of climate change.

Dress Code

In keeping with your camp’s laidback ethos, there’s no need for formality at Embers – you can come as you are.

In the morning, choose from hearty breakfast sandwiches, granola bowls, and other American favorites, accompanied by barista-style coffee.  For lunches out in the hills, grab ’n’ go bites are available to buy.

Hotel bar

Quench your desert thirst with a locally brewed craft beer, cocktail made with local spirits or glass of crisp rosé. The bar has a good range of soft drinks, too, including hot chocolate, prickly pear lemonade, unlimited tea or coffee – and even espresso.

Worth getting out of bed for

A range of on-site programming – from stargazing to crafts to live acoustic music – is included with your stay at Under Canvas Mount Rushmore. And gathering around the fire pit to swap stories of the day’s adventures (and to toast marshmallows, of course) is each day’s natural footnote. Stretch out weary muscles at a morning yoga class or flow on your own with a mat that you can borrow in the privacy of your own tent.

There are hiking trails and climbing routes to spare in the Black Hills and Custer State Park, so grab some snacks and head out for a day of exploring. The young (and young-at-heart) will love flying through the treetops on a ropes course and ziplining excursion. If you prefer your activities at ground level, ATV tours, guided treks and horseback riding can be arranged on request. There’s also kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding on the nearby river. And the striking rock formations of Badlands National Park are just over an hour’s drive away.

Mount Rushmore and its four 60-foot-high faces are worth the visit. And if your sights are set on something even bigger, then try Crazy Horse Memorial – a monument to the famed Lakota Sioux warrior, carved into granite in the Black Hills over a period of 50 years.

Local restaurants

Designed to satisfy pre- and post-adventure appetites, a regionally inspired menu back at base means you’re unlikely to dine outside of camp.

In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Under Canvas Mount Rushmore in South Dakota…

South Dakota’s Under Canvas Mount Rushmore is a monumentally good outdoor camping getaway. Safari-inspired tents are set atop decked platforms, featuring wood-burning stoves, comfy beds and luxe linens. You can limber up for a day of adventure with group yoga sessions; and the resort’s restaurant, Embers, is all set to fuel your forays with modern American fare. Days enjoyed in South Dakota’s storied Black Hills – as rich in history as they are in mica and quartz – are tailed with guitar-soundtracked evenings in front of the fire. Take your time toasting marshmallows, exchanging tales from the day with your fellow campers, and sitting back to contemplate the twinkling canopy of stars overhead. With a camp like this, we feel like Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln and Roosevelt are gazing down in approval (and, let’s be honest, a hint of envy).
