Under Canvas West Yellowstone will close on 9 September 2024, and in 2025 it will be open between 21 May and 8 September.

At the hotel

Walking trails, fire pits, Lululemon yoga mats and blocks to borrow, Epiphone acoustic guitars to borrow, refillable aluminum water bottles, water refill stations, board games, free hot drinks and guest experience coordinators. In rooms: USB battery packs, battery-powered fans, wood-burning stove, lanterns, and organic Essential Oils bath products.

Our favourite rooms

Make the most of the region’s carefully protected dark skies in a Stargazer Tent, which has a constellation-spying window above the bed.

Packing tips

This is an unplugged kind of place – ditch the screens, and use the extra suitcase space for a film camera and a couple of extra layers.

Also

There’s no WiFi here, and you won’t find any TVs around, meaning evenings tend to be filled with stargazing, s’mores and fireside music.

Pet‐friendly

Dogs are welcome for a fee of $25 each a night, so long as they’re kept on a leash and aren’t left unattended in your tent. See more pet-friendly hotels in Yellowstone National Park.

Children

Welcome; there’s no kids’ club or babysitting, but most tents can be booked with adjacent kids’ tents, and family-friendly activities included with your stay make Under Canvas West Yellowstone an all-ages favorite.

Sustainability efforts

As part of the company’s Mindful Approach to development and operations, Under Canvas West Yellowstone has been designed to minimize disturbance, maximize open spaces, and flow with the natural topography of the land. Pull-chain showers and low-flow toilets reduce water usage; low-level lighting limits light pollution; and cleaning and bath products are selected to reduce damage to the environment. There’s no WiFi and electricity has been replaced with rechargeable battery packs, which power fans and provide USB ports; reusable water bottles are provided to cut single-use plastic, and the cutlery is biodegradable and compostable. In addition, Under Canvas works closely with global non-profit, the Nature Conservancy, to educate and help mitigate the threats of climate change.

Under Canvas West Yellowstone is set on 40 acres of prime Montana ranchland, a 10-minute drive from Yellowstone National Park’s west entrance.

Planes

Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport, Jackson Hole Airport and Idaho Falls Regional Airport are all around a two-hour drive away. Alternatively, seasonal flights from Denver and Salt Lake City touch down at Yellowstone Airport – from there, it’s just a 15-minute drive to camp.

Automobiles

Driving tours through the park can be arranged by the adventure concierge, but you’ll want your own wheels for solo expeditions. There’s private parking at the camp. Please note that you’ll need to purchase a $35 pass to enter Yellowstone National Park by car, either online or at the park gate.

Worth getting out of bed for

There’s a curated weekly roster of activities at the camp, from arts and crafts to scavenger hunts and stargazing sessions. And you can swim (or wade) in the Madison River, which weaves majestically through the camp’s lush valley grounds. But really, one look at the surrounding scenery and you’ll be raring to explore Yellowstone. Some of the park’s best-known natural wonders are within easy reach – it’s around an hour’s drive to Grand Prismatic Spring, and 45 minutes to Old Faithful. Beyond the big names, Under Canvas’ adventure concierge can arrange all manner of guided escapades. Driving or hiking tours take in Yellowstone’s geysers, waterfalls and wildlife hotspots. Get your yee-haw on with a wrangler-guided horseback ride through Gallatin National Forest. White-knuckle daredevils can ramp up the adrenalin with white-water rafting on the Gallatin River. And if that sounds a little lively, expert-led fly fishing might be more your speed.

Local restaurants

Designed to satisfy pre- and post-adventure appetites, a regionally inspired menu back at base means you’re unlikely to dine outside of camp.

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this upscale tented stay in Montana and unpacked their daypacks and Under Canvas merch, a full account of their back-to-nature break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Under Canvas West Yellowstone…

Being a good neighbor: amid untamed ranchland just a few miles from Yellowstone National Park, there’s a bit more to it than bringing round a batch of cookies. But it’s something Under Canvas West Yellowstone takes seriously, with a raft of eco measures and a restaurant sourcing locally and seasonally wherever possible. The rewards for this responsibility are rich. Mornings might mean yoga in the middle of a meadow or a cobweb-clearing swim in the Madison River, and guitar-strummed evenings are illuminated by the Milky Way.

There’s no WiFi, but kids will be kept so busy with s’mores and scavenger hunts, they won’t even notice their screen time being slashed. And before you start trying to navigate by the north star, see the concierge about expert-led adventures through the park’s spectacular landscape.

Lo-fi doesn’t mean skimping on comfort, either. Every safari-style tent is decked out with West Elm furnishings and a king-size bed. Waking up well rested with Yellowstone’s wild beauty on your doorstep, loving your neighbor becomes second nature.
