10am. Earliest check-in is at 3pm.

More details

Rates don’t include breakfast, but fresh spreads are available daily from $10 to $20 each. You’ll have free access to yoga classes, indoor and outdoor games, stargazing and (unlimited nightly) s’mores sessions, and as much coffee and tea as you’d like.

Also

Given the outdoor – and largely undisturbed – nature of this camp, areas of the resort may be difficult if you have limited mobility.

Please note

Food isn’t allowed in any of the tents here, in line with Under Canvas’s Mindful Approach to your pristine surroundings.

Hotel closed

The camp closes on 4 November; for 2025, it’ll open from 13 March until 3 November.

At the hotel

Yoga deck with Lululemon mats and blocks to borrow, a lounge shade pod, nightly campfires, refillable aluminum water bottles, water refill stations, free hot drinks, board games, guest experience coordinators and a small boutique. In tents: USB battery packs, battery-powered fans, lanterns, a wood-burning stove and organic Essential Oils bath products.

Our favourite rooms

Keep an eye on the constellations in the Stargazer Tent – there’s a viewing window directly above your pillow. For families, there are options with an adjacent kids’ tent with twin beds.

Packing tips

Layers – it might be sunny and warm by day here, but the desert climate means temperatures can drop rapidly after sundown. Get cozy by the fire and enjoy the star-filled skies.

Also

There’s no WiFi here, and you won’t find any TVs around, meaning evenings tend to be filled with stargazing and fireside music and s’mores.

Pet‐friendly

Your pup is welcome to join you for $25 a night, but he’ll have to stay on his lead around the grounds and can’t be left alone in the tent. Please note that in the national park, only Pa’rus Trail is dog-friendly. See more pet-friendly hotels in Zion National Park.

Children

Little Smiths are very welcome at Under Canvas Zion. The Suite tent is ideal for bigger clans. Family-friendly activities include stargazing, fireside s’mores, games and crafts.

Sustainability efforts

As part of the company’s Mindful Approach to development and operations, Under Canvas Zion has been designed to minimize disturbance, maximize open spaces, and flow with the natural topography of the land. Pull-chain showers and low-flow toilets reduce water usage; cleaning and bath products are selected to reduce damage to the environment, and onsite solar panels provide energy for use across the camp. The brand’s commitment to low light pollution and protecting the night sky are setting the standard in the industry, with five DarkSky-certified camps in the collection, including Under Canvas Zion. There’s no WiFi and electricity has been replaced with rechargeable battery packs, which power fans and provide USB ports; reusable water bottles are provided to cut single-use plastic, and the cutlery is biodegradable and compostable. In addition, Under Canvas works closely with global non-profit, the Nature Conservancy, to educate and help mitigate the threats of climate change.

Top Table

After dinner, snagging a spot fireside will soon be your nightly ritual.

Dress Code

It’s less catwalk and more casual – don’t feel obliged to change out of your trail gear.

Hotel restaurant

Embers is in the main lobby tent at the heart of the camp. Lanterns keep it cozy, and there’s a convivial atmosphere created by guests catching up on the day’s adventures over drinks. For dinner, seasonal ingredients, sourced regionally wherever possible, inform a menu that includes salads, burgers, trout, and pasta. Just be sure to leave room for help-yourself s’mores, available nightly for toasting. At breakfast, the Good S’morning (yogurt with granola, banana, chocolate and Graham crackers) and vanilla french toast are day-starting treats. And you can buy grab ’n’ go bites to take on the trails.

Address
Under Canvas Zion
3955 Kolob Terrace Road
Virgin
84779
United States

Under Canvas Zion is a 196-acre camp in jaw-dropping red-rock desert next to Zion National Park in Utah.

Planes

The closest airport is St George (SGU), 45 minutes away, where domestic flights land from cities including Los Angeles, Salt Lake City, Denver and Phoenix. For international flights, use Las Vegas’ Harry Reid International Airport. From there, it’s a three-hour drive to Zion. The hotel recommends you rent a car in St George or Las Vegas, as it’ll be cheaper and easier to get in and out of town, and will allow you to explore the nearby national parks and surrounding area on your own time.

Automobiles

You’ll need a car round these parts: there are places to pick up a rental at the airports and the hotel has free parking onsite.

Other

Please note that from March to late November, Zion Canyon Scenic Drive can only be accessed by shuttle bus. All other sections of the park, including Kolob Canyons, Kolob Terrace Road, and Highway 9, are open to vehicles year-round.

Worth getting out of bed for

Choose a trail, any trail: there are 18 major routes in Zion National Park, plus countless offshoots. The Canyon Overlook Trail is a gentle one-hour introduction with a handsome payoff at the top; tight switchbacks and steep drops make the Angel’s Landing Trail breathtaking in every sense. If you really mean business – and don’t mind getting wet – take on Zion’s most famous trail, the Narrows

Aside from hiking to your heart’s content, there are extreme options aplenty, including rock climbing, rappelling, mountain biking – and (for a mash-up of adrenalin-pumping sports) canyoneering. If you’d rather skip the legwork, join a Jeep safari tour or hire an all-terrain buggy to explore the desert; motor-free alternatives include guided horseback riding and river kayaking. Armchair hikers can get a basic orientation and audio tour of the park by taking the shuttle from the visitor centre along the 57-mile Zion Canyon Scenic Drive

Back at base, this international DarkSky-certified camp has a twinkle in its eye, with guided stargazing, ‘starbathing’ meditation, telescopes to use, full-moon hikes and cosmic cocktail parties.

Local restaurants

Designed to satisfy pre- and post-adventure appetites, a regionally inspired menu back at base means you’re unlikely to dine outside of camp.

Anonymous review

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this tent village next to Zion National Park and unpacked their film rolls and flasks, a full account of their desert break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Under Canvas Zion in Utah…

As the sun sets over Under Canvas Zion, the sandstone landscape turns a fiery shade of crimson, a milky moon rises and the brightest stars begin to twinkle in the desert sky. It’s an awe-inspiring scene from the edge of one of the west’s most naturally gorgeous national parks, where the Virgin River has sliced a 600-metre canyon through the crumbling rock. Later, you’ll retire to your well appointed tent, dressed with hardwood floors, handcrafted furnishings and a king-size bed that ensures restful nights. Tomorrow, perhaps, you’ll go climbing and rappelling, try mountain biking and horse riding along the canyon rim, or maybe just marvel at the rock formations and wish you’d paid more attention in geography. But right now, it’s time to tuck into whatever Chef’s been cooking, leave room for a few s’mores and swap stories with new-found friends around the fire.
