Setting

Crowning Loulé

Family-friendly Viceroy Ombria Resort rules over this pocket of Portuguese countryside with a deft hand. Carved into the hillside, this sprawling retreat at first seems more modern than trad. But look behind its breezy interiors and high-spec spa and you’ll spot subtle tributes to Algarvian culture throughout. Artisan-led activities aim to showcase time-honoured customs. And the hotel’s five restaurants are united in another long-held tradition: spinning regional produce into impressive Algarve cuisine.

More details

Also

The hotel is fully EAA-compliant, with ramps at all staired entrances, evenly paved paths and staff-driven buggies to get around the resort. Some of the Deluxe King Rooms with Valley Views have been adapted for guests with limited mobility and hearing — just contact the Smith 24 Travel Team to book.

At the hotel

18-hole golf course and pro shop, fitness centre, bikes to borrow and free WiFi throughout. In rooms: TV, sound system, air-conditioning, minibar, Nespresso coffee machine, tea-making kit, free glass-bottled water, bathrobes, slippers and Corpus bath products.

Our favourite rooms

The Algarve is the sun-kissed supermodel of scenery, so make the most of these speech-stealing Portuguese landscapes with any of the Valley View picks — the Deluxe King Room is particularly sweet, courtesy of its romantic soaking tub and secluded setting. If you’re coming with the clan, the Two Bedroom Residences all sleep up to eight (six without the sofa-bed) and some have their own private pool

Poolside

Pick from four outdoor pools to paddle in (all open from 7.30am to 9pm). Sun-baskers who like the occasional cool down can lap up the laidback ambience at the clubhouse pool, and if you take your swimming seriously, there’s a lap pool a few steps away. Families can splash about at the child-friendly pool, and there’s an adults-only option outside at the spa for anyone seeking a quieter dip.

Spa

Set to open in March 2025, the Spa at Viceroy will be a welcome addition. In the works are a sauna, steam room, hammam, hydrotherapy pool and sensory showers. Keep the calm coming with a facial, massage or traditional healing ritual in one of the eight treatment rooms, where deknotting maestros will use homemade rose-infused oils and quartz to restore and revive.

Packing tips

Your finest set of golf clubs, cleats and caps for a loop of the onsite 18-hole course.

Also

Fitness buffs can find their fix at the gym, open round-the-clock and decked out with Technogym equipment. Yoga classes and personal training sessions are also available here.

Pet‐friendly

As long as your furry friend weighs less than 30 kilogrammes, he’s welcome to join you for €50 a night. Your pup must be leashed throughout, and won’t be allowed in the pools, spa, gym or kids’ club, but they will be greeted with a kitted-out pet pack. See more pet-friendly hotels in Algarve.

Children

Little Smiths are extremely well catered for at Viceroy Ombria Resort.

Best for

Under-12s will be in their element.

Recommended rooms

All but the King rooms sleep up to four, but if you’re looking for some additional privacy, we’d suggest splashing for the Two Bedroom Residence, which has two separate bedrooms (one with two queen-size beds for kids) and a sofa-bed.

Crèche

The V Team Kids Club runs year-round with engaging activities for all age groups. Little Smiths will spend their days painting at the arts and crafts station, playing dress-up by the costume box, cooking in the play kitchen, watching movies and running around outdoors. There’s even a nap area for tots.

Activities

The kids’ club is fully staffed with vetted caregivers, so you can safely leave little ones to their fun. If you’d rather stick together, the hotel also offers family-oriented activities, just ask at reception for the current selection.

Swimming pool

Two of the four are child-friendly, but the dedicated kids’ pool is where little ones will have the most fun splashing about. The clubhouse pool is kept slightly calmer, but if you’re basking here, they are welcome to join.

Meals

Kids’ menus are available at all the restaurants, but we’d suggest skipping Solalua if you have little ones — this fine dining destination is best tailored towards the adults.

Babysitting

Viceroy has a team of trained onsite babysitters, who can be hired by the hour, day or night with advance notice and for an additional charge.

No need to pack

Baby-listening kit; everything you'll need is at reception.

Sustainability efforts

From a member company of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, it’s only natural that Viceroy Ombria Resort is geared towards all things green. The hotel itself was built using locally sourced materials and traditional Algarvian techniques to ensure it met the Nearly Zero-Energy Buildings Principles. When it comes to food, everything is sourced from nearby farmers and the onsite plant nursery works to protect and restore local flora and fauna. Everything inside the hotel, from the air-conditioning to the bath products are sustainable, and even its golf course has a GEO certification. There are also recycling points everywhere and chargers for electric vehicles. Plus, during your stay, there are opportunities to take part in gardening and community workshops to learn more about its surrounding neighbourhoods and conserving the Algarve’s wildlife.

Top Table

Snag a spot on the rooftop at Casa e Fora Bar & Lounge, or reserve a seat on Solalua’s chef’s table for something more special.

Dress Code

Keep things casual throughout the day, but bring out your finest threads for dinner at Solalua.

Hotel restaurant

If you’re ensconced in the kick-back-and-relax way of resort life, Viceroy’s regal spread of dining options ensures there’s enough variety without having to leave the grounds. Days start at Ombria Kitchen, where elaborate breakfast spreads show what chef Pedro Pinto can do and a rotating menu of wood-fired plates available throughout the day can flex with your itinerary. Café Central welcomes all-day nattering over coffee and handmade pastries; and for those unwilling to lose their sunny spot, order light, locally made bites straight to your sunlounger from the Salpico Pool Bar. Gaze over the golfers at rooftop Casa e Fora Bar & Lounge, where cosy comfort food is the go-to. Solalua steals the spotlight during dinner, with accomplished and creative sharing plates, rooted in traditional Portuguese flavours.

Hotel bar

Bellvino translates to ‘beautiful wine’, and that’s just what you’ll find up at this reservation-only rooftop bar. Sommeliers work closely with local fromagers and farmers to ensure charcuterie boards are skillfully paired with vintage bottles, and poured against sweeping backdrops of the Algarvian countryside. You’ll also find lengthy lists of craft beers and cocktails at Casa e Fora Bar & Terrace, and tipples can be taken poolside at Salpico.

Last orders

Ombria Kitchen opens 7am–10pm; Café Central is 10am–6pm; Salpico serves between noon and 7pm; Casa e Fora Bar & Lounge, 8.30am–7pm, and Solalua plates dinner 5pm to midnight. You’ll have to book at Bellvino as its tastings are reserved for small groups.

Room service

Available at all hours for an additional €10. A reduced menu runs between 10pm and 7.30am.

Worth getting out of bed for

Viceroy Ombria has an abundance of activities tailored to show you a quieter, tourist-free side to the storied Algarve. Learn how to herd sheep from local shepherds with a visit to one of the region’s nearby farms, or head off for a guided apiary tour, where you’ll see how honey is made before sampling its sweet nectar with a Tor bread-paired tasting. Hike, bike or horseback ride around the rolling valleys — just be sure to ask staff to pack you a picnic, as you’ll likely find an idyllic lunch spot on your travels.

Hands-on creatives will find their inspiration at one of the nearby studios, where pottery classes are held with local artisans; or, visit the Algarve's so-called cultural capital, Loulé, and admire its Moorish architecture and barter your way through markets. If you’re an avid golfer, take to the 18-hole course, putting green and driving range, all set within the resort. And if your preferred mode of self-improvement is sun-warmed and horizontal, Ancão Beach is a 25-minute drive away, backed by sand dunes and lined with beach clubs.

Local restaurants

You won’t be hard pressed to find raved-about fish restaurants around the Algarve, and over on Ancão Beach, award-winning 2 Passos plates it fresh catch against calming ocean views. In Loulé, stop off at Cafézïque — a casual fine dining restaurant in the Old Town’s centre, where marinated mackerel, smoked sweet potatoes, grilled octopus and pistachio-topped seasonal veg are just a few highlights.

As soon as our reviewers have returned from this sprawling resort in Portugal and unpacked their locally made honey and Tor bread, a full account of their reviving break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Viceroy Ombria Resort in the Algarve…

There’re no iron fists at Viceroy Ombria Resort — this luxurious leader puts its followers, and families, first. Bright and airy lodgings gaze over the Algarve’s rolling valleys and citrus groves; but it isn’t just the scenery that helps you dig into your locale. Interiors have been designed with nods to Portuguese heritage (Azulejo tiling, lofty beamed ceilings, mod-Moorish accents) and staff are on hand to plan all sorts of local activities that highlight the region’s riches. You’ll find native culinary skills in strong supply at the five restaurants, which draw locals and guests alike for wood-fired, seasonal fare and view-paired sharing plates.

The smart move towards uncovering all this resort has to offer is to divide and conquer: tots can take to the Disneyland-like kids’ club, while adults walk the calmer route (a few hours at the spa or cocktails by the clubhouse pool, say). Days here tail into fit-for-royalty slumber in butter-soft beds, making Viceroy Ombria Resort a leader you’ll be happy to follow.
